Who runs on either side in the general?

In Massachusetts I can see State Sen. Ryan Fatman (R) or possibly LG Karyn Polito (R-Shrewsbury) have interest in running on the Republican side, and Joe Kennedy (D-Newton) and Katherine Clark (D-Melrose) run on the Democratic side.

In Ohio I'm not too certain.

In MA, it seems obvious for the most part that Richard Tisei would be appointed by Baker. The Democratic candidate has a bit of a bigger field to choose from. There's been lots of speculation that AG Maura Healey will run against Baker in 2018, but she might run in that special election. There's also Joe Kennedy and Seth Moulton, with Niki Tsongas a potential dark horse.

In Ohio I think Pat Tiberi would be the front runner.

They already did to hasten a special election in case of a vacancy, this happened in 2004 when they feared that John Kerry could have his replacement picked by Romney

They could also impose the WY/HI system where the outgoing senator's party committee gives the governor a list they must pick from.  That part narrowly failed the last time they changed it.
Honestly, I feel like the WY/HI system should be what every state uses.
