Both Hamas and Fatah seem really bad at both governing, and at making Palestinian nationalism successful. Perhaps there should be a new organization?

Of course there should be, but the violent assholes aren't going to give up power without murdering a lot of their own people and the always popular with the electorate, bomb/blame Jews will get a bunch more killed.  The Mohammed Sixpacks are screwed no matter what happens.  Nobody can help them because nobody can help them.  They need a Gandhi, and I'm sure they've had a few.....and they were quickly murdered or GTFO of there.

Well, Israel did support Hamas as recently as the early 1990s because they believed, for some reason, that an Islamic fundamentalist group would somehow be less hostile to Israel than a Soviet-allied revolutionary guerilla group would be.

Islamic fundamentalism has proven to be less of a threat to Israel than Arab nationalism, has it not?

That's a very good point. Islamism has thrown Syria into chaos, ensured that Egypt is busy at home, split Sunni from Shia, split Christian Arab from Muslim Arab, split Palestine and weaken any potential alliance against Israel. Of course the Israeli long term problem are if the Islamists win and/or if Israel succeed in alienate it western "allies". No matter what some Israeli thinks, there's no alternative sugar daddy other than USA

China? Or even Russia (I assume Moscow doesn't care about playing both sides)?

Russia already has pretty friendly relations with Israel. They're Israel's main oil supplier because the Gulf states won't.

The difference is that right now Israel is in a relationship, where they wag the dog, while India, Russia or China could be potential future partners of Israel, these countries won't sacrifise anything for such a alliance, instead Israel have to give them something, and they can't expect the economic and arms support USA gives them.

China is very unemotional and transactional in its foreign relationships. All they care about is what you can sell them. That's why you see them expanding their footprint in Africa - they want to mine as much ore and minerals out of there as possible. The problem for Israel is that the things they can offer China - IT and aerospace - are things they can easily get from other developed countries.

I'm not sure I'd want to get in bed with Russia if I were Israel. Allowing Russian troops to be stationed there would inevitably be part of the deal. And imagine what would happen if Putin decided that all those Russian-speaking Jews in Israel needed to be "liberated" Crimea-style.

And in both cases, Israel will never be able to tug at heartstrings the way they can with Americans. Chinese and Russians aren't Evangelical Christians - they don't care about Israel in that sense. And they don't care about it being a democracy or having a better human rights record than other countries in the region.

Russia and China, both of whom have been strengthening its economic ties with Israel, are currently using Israel like a slutty college girl. It won't last and the Israelis know it.
