^^ In 64 and 72 LBJ/Nixon had such a YUGE lead that they weren't going to waste time debating. In 68 the debates would have included Wallace if they were held, which the major party nominees would not tolerate. A similar intolerance of John Anderson almost derailed the 1980 debates btw.

Nixon obviously had no interest in debating again after his surprise loss in 1960.  He knew the number of people watching television was only increasing!

Trump will not be foolish enough to back out.  I could see Hillary wanting a indirect debate setting (similar to those town halls) if she gets dinged after the 1st debate.

In 1960 it was a novel idea for the 2 young non-incumbant candidates (Nixon and Kennedy) to have debates on TV.  Especially in a close election.
But it's ridiculous to do it every 4 years, multiple times.  It is demeaning to the candidates, with the stupid moderators and timed answers.  A sitting president should never agree to debate, unless it's his idea and on his terms.  There are so many primary debates, we don't need general election debates.
The 2012 debates between Obama and Romney were awful.  The 2008 debates between Obama and the elderly McCain were just as bad.

Trump needs the debate more so than Hillary.

Doubt it -if he can't bring himself to debate Bernie Sanders of all people, how can he face Hillary Clinton who is infinitely more skilled than he is?

Trump is too scared to debate Bernie, but so is Hillary. I don't think Trump is too scared to debate Hillary.

Hillary is so scared to debate Bernie that she did so 9 times. Do you really think a 10th would've made a difference?

If it wouldn't make a difference, then why did she renege on her promise?

She's too busy with Trump now, if you haven't noticed.

Whatever she's busy with regarding Trump isn't very effective. Bernie is polling quite a bit better against Trump than her.
For the ten billionth time, polls this far out from the election mean nothing. NOTHING! Hillary Clinton is the most scrutinized individual in America right now, and probably the most scrutinized American since at least the turn of the millennium. If Bernie were getting anywhere near that level of scrutiny, you can bet he would be polling far worse than Hillary against Trump or any other Republican.

So can we please get rid of this meme that Bernie would outperform Hillary? Please?

It's jfern. He believes that Sanders has been the victim of the most vicious negative campaign since Lee Atwater's days.

Not to mention we would be bored out of our skulls. At least Hillary has lead a very interesting and colorful public life on many levels of complexity. Bernie is a one note older white male who nobody heard of or cared about for the last 25 years.

It's not just jfern or even this site, though. I see Bernie fans all over the Internet peddling this garbage.

They should combine it with other reality TV. Like maybe Gordon Ramsey can moderate and in between talking about trade policy, the candidates have to make a hog roast.
