Both North and South Viet Nam have agreed to elections as agreed by the Geneva Accords in 1954. The elected President would lead a unified Viet Nam. Unless one candidate wins 50% + 1 outright, the top two will move on to the next round. Here are the candidates

Ho Chi Minh - leader of the anti-colonial Viet Minh forces and (temporary) head of state in the North. While a founder of the French Communist Party, he claims to put nationalism first. His critics denounce him as a Stalinist and the Viet Minh as nothing more than a front for Communism. According to popular beleif, he is the favorite to win. Ho Chi Minh is backed by the Soviet Union.

Bao Dai - last Emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty of Annam Viet Nam. He is seen as the most status- quo candidate and claims to best person to unite all the anti-Communist forces. His critics accuse of him of being an inept collaborator and immoral womanizer. Bao Dai is favored by France.

Ngo Dinh Diem - former minister of South Viet Nam, Diem claims that he is better suited at providing strong leadership against Communism and is able to woo American support (at the expense of France) for Viet Nam. His critics accuse him of being a dictator-in-the-making with many enemies and his frevent Catholicism a liablity in a Buddhist majority country. His victory would strengthen American presence in Southeast Asia.

Hồ Chí Minh by default. Cannot vote for the globalist option in Đại or the imperialist option in Diệm.

While I prefer Dai, I cast a strategic vote for Diem in the hopes of keeping Dai from getting too much power.

Minh (Not a Colonist or Imperialist.) I don't even need to second think this.
