My thoughts on Kristol's 3rd party "candidate":

Look, it was worth a shot. At the end of the day, they couldn't get a heavy hitter to give it a whirl.

I'm not voting for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, period. I was either voting for this group or I was going to vote for Gary Johnson. It looks like I'll vote for Gary Johnson.

The time to lay the groundwork for this would have been three months ago, when Trump was already running the table in the primaries. But Kristol and the rest of them are living in another universe from the people who actually vote in GOP primaries and couldn't fathom that anyone other than Marco Rubio would win until after it was too late to get something like this up and running.

That's one of those things that sounds nice in theory but is hard to practice (a bit like running a conserative third option candidate to be fair). How are you going to get guys to commit to such a thing when the easiest way to stop Donald Trump was for him to lose the Republican nomination? It wasn't all that clear he was probably going to clinch the Republican nomination until the New York primary.

I knew he was going to be the nominee after Super Tuesday (March 1). So did anyone who wasn't in abject denial about what the Republican Party has become.
