Just recently began study on the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was wondering if my opinion is correct and what other people's thoughts are.

While the Puritan movement itself was obviously pretty nutty and Winthrop, from what I've read, basically ruled as a despot, he proved to be a fairly level-headed leader with decent judgement. The real nutcases were guys like Thomas Dudley and John Endecott.

What do others here think?

No opinion, but I want to shoot myself every time I hear someone quote Ronald Reagan quoting him.

Wait, there really was a person named John Winthrop? I thought I just made up a name for a Mitt Romney expy for an election game.

For anyone interested in learning more about this period, The Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick is a fascinating read.

Should've paid more attention during APUSH!
