Germany just did, and based on that Obama Doctrine article that came out in the Atlantic, Obama thinks Erdogan is a little bitch who isn't helping in the middle east and probably wouldn't do anything about it.  Lord knows Obama's probably sick of playing this game.  Why not just come out in December and declare that the United States recognizes the Armenian genocide as a genocide?  Seems like a very Obama thing to do.

I'd certainly hope so.

No, because Turkey will retaliate against US interests in the middle east. I think most people underestimate just how unhinged Erdogan is on this issue.

The Turkish political class in general. Remember Erdogan has to pander to the Mhp i(because he wants to amend the constitution), a party who would quite freely commit the genocide now.

No, it would be hugely detrimental to our interests in the Middle East.  Everyone knows and privately acknowledges what it was, so let's leave it at that and not shoot ourselves in the foot.

On his last day in office, Obama should get completely hammered and deliver a televised, unscripted rant about just how despicable pretty much every Middle East ruler is (and point out the now-unspoken truth that the 40% of the Republican Party who support Donald Trump are basically people whose "conservatism" is all about them being unable to deal with having a colored boy in the White House.)

99+% of Americans have no clue Turks and Armenians have any kind of beef.  The idea that they would have any opinion on Ottoman Empire policies is amusing.

Glad I could 'amuse' you. Do you ever get tired of being a smug sob? You know very well what I meant to say, but choose to argue why? Almost everyone who is aware of the event in question recognizes it for what it is. (Except Turks). Happy?

Do you get tired of name calling?

There is nothing "snobbish" about stating a fact.  If you weren't clear or you were misunderstood just explain your point of view.

FYI I count myself mostly in the 99%.  I knew there was a controversy but I was unaware of the all the details.  I don't have an opinion about what the president should do.

I would rather see him recognize that the Greek city of Constantinople has been under Turkish occupation since 1453. Of course, that's not going to happen either. Wink

Is this some wacky joke or are you seriously pledging support for Golden Dawn policy?

Force marching large populations of women, children, and the elderly for several days into the desert without food or water, and then leaving them there without supplies with the expectation that they die of exposure isn't a genocide ... because reasons.

I knew someone would bring up Golden Dawn if I said that. Just because I happen to share one minor political view with them, doesn't mean that I agree with them on other things. Golden Dawn is, if not an outright Neo-Nazi party, full of Neo-Nazis, and I do not support the party in any way. Nazism and Neo-Nazism are disgusting. Is that a clear enough disavowal for you?

If you seriously support the annexation of Byzantium then you either support Greece becoming an effectively multiethnic state (which ... Won't happen) or the ethnic cleansing of the area.

I'd love if he did (I'm Armenian American). However, Turkey is a strategic ally and I don't see it happening for a long time.

If Turkey were willing to acknowledge its past (Like Germany does) this would be handled. Unfortunately, The Turkish government refuses to find the courage to do this.
