Oh hi everyone! Guess who on this forum lives near the largest Somali population in the US? Guess who on this forum interacts with Somalis on an almost daily basis? Guess who on this forum actually sits right next to a Somali girl at work? That's right! Funny you know, there's a fire department right near the main concentration of Somalis here and it has an American flag out front. Guess how many attacks there have been there? That's right, zero!

But as a few have mentioned it's quite clear that is mental illness. It's also impossible she was wearing a burka, especially as it's not customary in Somali. I'm not surprised some random people in Georgia can't tell the difference between a burkah, chador and hijab, but I'd expect at least the news to. Embarassing.

This may surprise you, but Muslim women are actually capable of thinking for themselves and making their own decisions.
Wouldn't a woman who believes in radical Islam voluntarily agree and readily believe in those values, though? I don't see, persay, a lesbian Muslim woman who blocks bridges with BLM protesters, shouts down speakers on campuses, and protests frequently with fellow members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation strapping on a bomb vest in the name of Jihad.

Eh, wyclef seems to be a really chill guy, but IMO Lauryn hill has gone a little crazy.  Their cover of "killing me softly" is still really good though.

OT, but the somali community in the Twin Cities is great.

(apologies for assuming you're in the metro, but unaware of significant somali diaspora outside it)

I read the headline and thought that the woman in the burka had used an American flag to attack the family. American Islamo-Fascism as it's hypothetical finest.

If we used Russian grammar, this wouldn't be a problem.

Where does it say the woman is a foreigner let alone a refugee?  Pretty sweet that you want to tar and feather a huge swath of people based on a single half baked news report from a local affiliate.

we are talking about this lovely Somali woman.

Can you point out where in your link it says she is Somali?

You've got a lot to learn about the media.  If you swallow local news snippets like this hook line and sinker and use them as the basis of your world view that is an extraordinary level of naivete.

It's amazing when several legitimate news outlets report a story the Trump crowd (ie Republicans) say it is all just a conspiracy but when some obscure local affiliate publishes a half backed derogatory story about someone in a burka the same goons swear up and down the media is totally legitimate.

Of course, the right isn't alone in being annoying on this issue. While this was started as a parody of the typical cartoonish Teabagger reaction, I still do oppose the refugee resettlement and I still fully expected to hear Evergreen defend the assault.

didn't defend anything, sweetie.

Somalia is one country we shouldn't be taking refugees from. Very barbaric culture.

Anyway, Sanchez, when you make anti-refugee comments all the time, you shouldn't be surprised when people take this thread seriously.

I have a hard time believing this happened as described: if a woman was out in public in a full burqa, why wasn't she escorted by her husband or father?
This may surprise you, but Muslim women are actually capable of thinking for themselves and making their own decisions.
Under most interpretations of Islamic Law, women are supposed to be escorted by male relatives when they go outside. Numerous Hadith as well as much jurisprudence attest to this. In modern societies, this doesn't tend to be very practical, so it isn't really enforced outside of Saudi Arabia and rural regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, but these are also the regions where wearing the burqa/niqab is most prevalent, and if a woman adheres to such a strict interpretation of Islamic Law that she feels she must cover her face (which most Muslim women don't do, even in Muslim countries), she should also be escorted by a male relative.

This may make you uncomfortable, but think about it this way: at the end of the day, Islam is really no more patriarchal than the other Abrahamic religions. The difference, of course, is that almost nobody in the West is still trying to follow Christianity or Judaism literally, aside from a few Fundamentalist Christians in the U.S. Heartland and Deep South, and a very small number of Ultra-Orthodox Jews in New York and Israel.

Also, I am not arguing against the agency of Muslim women: far from it, actually. A woman who wears a buraq/niqab may in fact want to be escorted by a male relative both for physical safety and for compliance with the Sharia. Some women actually prefer this. It's just that this type of woman wouldn't be running out of the woods to attack random Georgians with their American flag.

I saw a whole mess of them at Six Flags Atlanta yesterday.  Usually 2 or 3 women in burqas with a handful of rugrats running around them.  No men.  Oddly, I saw ankle and arm flesh on a couple of them.  I'm pretty sure that was the first time I've ever seen someone in burqa like that.  It was pretty hot though.  (the temp and the ankles! It's almost like most people pick and choose aspects of their religion for the purpose of convenience?

I made the comment the other day in a thread about a naked guy attacking a Muslim woman while yelling racist comments that his public nudity made it much more likely this was about mental illness than Islamaphobia. The same (or rather reverse) seems to apply here equally.

That is all.
