could one of the two female senators from Maine win the republican primary and then the presidency?

A Clinton vs. Snowe/Collins race would be really interesting, but probably also a highly unrealistic race.

Is the fact that they are women their biggest problem?

The fact that they're Republican is their biggest problem. The fact that they are males doesn't even begin to compare.

They'd never win the nomination. The Republican party is too extremist.

Is John Kerry the most moderate Democrat?

How'd Lieberman do in the primaries?

Both parties' primaries make it difficult for moderates to go anywhere.

Kerry is far more moderate than Bush.
Lieberman's foreign policy is to the right of Bushes. So sorry that we didn't nominate a terrible speaker who always needlessly criticizes other Democrats, with a terrible foreign policy.

Collins & Snowe are WWAAYYYYY to moderate to get the nomination.  After Chafee they are the #2 & 33 most liberal Republicans in the Senate.  Both are pro-choice, tend to favor affirimitive action for women & minorities, against gay marriage, but gfavor protections for gays & lesbians (anti-discrimination laws, hate crime s, Colls is against the death penalty.  No way do the Republicans nominate pro-choice moderate to lslightly liberal women from the northeast

I can't see either Snowe or Collins getting anywhere in the GOP primary. They'd possibly fair better in "blue" state primaries, but I just can't either playing well in the GOP 'heartland'

In a general, they may do quite well in New England and other socially liberal, or moderate, states - and may win some - but they wouldn't win, overall

It's all speculation - but they have cat in hell's chance of the winning the nomination

If Gore had won in 2000, and then again in 2004, and everyone was making a huge thing about how the Republicans could never win the Presidency if they never won the Northeast, if the Democrats failing in the South turned into Republicans failing in the Northeast, that was the big story, then they'd have a 1% chance at the nomination.

As of now, no chance. If McCain is too moderate, these people are.

For the GOP, no way.  Funny, I would consider Snowe if she ran against say a Dennis Kucinich in a general election though.

Snowe and Collins are certainly moderates, but moderates in different ways actually..

Collins is actually a fair bit more conservative economically the Snowe for example - she is a ~~relatively~~ reliable vote on tax issues for example (not always, but generally speaking)

People fail to understand that Snow and Collins owe a great deal to the trail blazed by the late (and great) Margaret Chase Smith.

Maine has sure sent some great Republicans to the Senate.
