Since Atlas likes to talk about coal country, this might be of interest to some.

(Apologies if this isn't the appropriate board.)

Lexington Herald Leader

Basically, poverty and disease are, as one would expect, rampant in these areas.  Populations are declining and the few jobs that are available (i.e. coal) are among those most damaging to a person's safety and health.  It should be of no surprise why people who live in this region are as "bitter" as they are, especially when most of them can't afford to go anywhere else or find work that doesn't require education beyond a high school level.  I think this is all obvious to most of us, but little consideration is given to the actual living conditions of the people who live there as they are so easily tossed aside here.

Something to keep in mind.

Eastern Kentucky really is in a massive conundrum and has been for years. That poor region Sad I'm wondering though why the Cinci suburbs aren't higher.

Me too, especially Boone County, which is fast growing wealthy suburbia like Delaware County, OH or Hamilton County, IN.

Also surprised Woodford County doesn't score better, it's Lexington's wealthy suburban neighbor, like the ones mentioned above.

Sad! Bernie's counties are so low! He could've won if only his people chose to live

In the same mostly joking vein as (I assume) above, he likely only carried those counties because people don't live as long so there was a lower portion of old fogeys (who mostly voted for Hillary).

I'm wondering though why the Cinci suburbs aren't higher.

Because of the local history of right-wing policies that are failures, and because the drinking water is bad.

Let's not kid ourselves.  Coke and Mountain Dew are their drinking water.

Also, northern Kentucky may be the only place where it's possible to have both lake effect snow and dengue fever. And the rate of heroin abuse is through the roof.

Well, on the upside there are fewer and fewer people in those counties, and in WV and SW VA too.
