Paul Ryan told reporters that presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump's comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel are "textbook definition of a racist comment."

Do you agree ?

Yes, the comment is plainly and patently racist. If you disagree, take off your partisan blinders for a moment and imagine what you would think if a White Liberal Democrat (or better yet, one of the Dixiecrat boogeymen) had made an analogous remark about Clarence Thomas.

What kind of trips me up on this issue is the fact that I honestly couldn't really blame the judge, at least on a personal level, if he was biased against Trump. I mean, it's true that Donald Trump would be horrible for Hispanics, and people of "Mexican heritage" have every reason to hate him.

I have faith that the judge is still capable of doing his job, but... Donald Trump is objectively horrible, so I don't really give a sh-t what happens to him. I know that's short-sighted, but whatevs.

I cannot defend Trump here. I'm not so sure if it was the "textbook definition" of racism, but it was clearly a racist comment.

It's not a textbook definition of racism, but it is arguably racist.  Very odd that option isn't in the poll.

Here's the best analogy I can come up with:  If a radical nationalist in Mexico who wanted to keep out the Anglos pointed to the fact that the parents of a highly respected judge were white Americans as an explanation for he was allegedly not being treated fairly, I wonder what the response would be or should be.

There needs to be an option that it could be racist, but we still agree with it 100%.

Well, that would just mean you're a horrible person.

No, just a realist.  People are not perfect.  Race shades all our perceptions of people.  White liberals are biased in favor of minorities, for example.  On the surface, anyway.

Criticizing a judge based primarily on race is offensive and wrong. While it's true everybody has some bias, there are Hispanics who like Trump, and it was wrong of Trump to assume that the judge was biased because of his race. It just proved that Trump is, in fact, racist himself, and agreeing with the statement only gives the impression that you are also racist.

One other problem I have with this whole thing is that Trump attacked the judge on a ruling that hasn't yet occurred. What is he so worried about? It just underlines why we can't have Trump in the White House. A president this insecure, with so many skeletons in his closet, and who is blatantly racist is bound to be a disaster.

Next time I do a poll, and just for you, I will include an option saying ...
"It could be racist, I agree with racism, and I am a bigot."
This option will have "your name written all over it."

Yes, but in Trump's defense, that's the only way he's going to get votes. Cut the man some slack! Smiley

Chris Christie has known Donald Trump for 14 years, and said he is not a racist.

"It's pretty telling that over the last week or so all of our resident Trump hacks have slowly but steadily been transitioning from, "No, of course Trump's not a racist" to "Well, sometimes it's okay to be a little racist."

Not quite. He's not really arguing that the judge is incompetent due to his ethnic heritage, but that it presents a potential political conflict of interest with respect to him personally due to his outspoken political views as a prominent politician. However, the two are deeply intertwined in this case. Either way, it does seem a step further for Trump than his previous comments, at least optically; this is as close as he's come to the "line," as it were.

It's a different La Raza, and they are completely unaffiliated with each other

They were racist comments, there's simply no legitimate argument to be made otherwise.

Not surprising when the KKK and the American Nazi Party have endorsed him.............
