Anyway, it can be extraordinarily difficult to ignore politics after becoming so invested, so I cannot see the Sanders crowd simply disappearing or dissolving/coalescing into the Clinton camp. Perhaps in the short term they support one of the other candidates or become disassociated with electoral politics, but an entire generation of politically class-aware people isn't just going to go away.

Long term effect: in 10 years time this will be the face of the Democratic party with a strong SD tone and the progressive caucus taking over the house factions

I'd say about 1/3 would take option 1, while 2/3 would take option 2.

Short term:

Most of them will come around and vote for Hillary or perhaps not vote at all. The hard core will pout a lot and threaten to vote for Trump.

Long term:

They'll find a new leader who is younger who will be much better than Bernie, and they will dominate the party, changing the face of it for years to come.

And they will weed out the corruption, the big money, the deck being stacked for the 1% and it will be more of a unity consciousness where all citizens matter.
