What if North Dakota had held a closed primary? Would Bernie still have won that state?

Something that indicates a Hillary win - besides South Dakota, of course - is eastern Montana...

Yeah I think Hillary would have won it narrowly. Eastern North Dakota would be similar to eastern South Dakota and Bernie's position to ban fracking is anathema to western North Dakota (and it probably part of the reason he lost counties in eastern Montana).

Yeah, I meant eastern Montana. I suffer from an east-west confusion. Sorry!

It would have been very close.  According to Silver, Clinton does about 20 points better when you go from a caucus to a primary.

Considering she won an open SD primary, why would she not win a CLOSED ND primary? Open ND primary would be a better question. I don't really know enough differences between the states to guess that though.

Good question. I'm not entirely confident making a guess one way or another, but I'd wager it'd be a single digit win regardless of who won.

It's a silly question though because North Dakota doesn't have voter registration, thus no party registration. Doing a closed primary would be impossible.

Considering she only won by 2%, I doubt it. It would've been closer, but since ND doesn't have as many small cities in the East, she wouldn't be able to build up a margin as easily.

Another interesting question might be whether Sanders would've won an open primary in NM.

But the Republicans did hold a closed a caucus.

ND is more religious and more Minnesota(ish!) then SD. SD also has more indians (well much more on the reservations). western ND is also more hilly (well geography) and more educated then the southern part (which I think would help Sanders). Remember in 08 Obama took ND well getting thumped in SD, so I still think Sanders would pull it off.

the differences seem larger really only if your from one of the states!

I think Clinton did better among whites in South Dakota than Native Americans.

But no exit polling so we can only guess.

As many people mentioned Sanders' position on fracking is deeply unpopular in the state.
So Clinton would probably win and with a more comfortable margin than SD.
