That will cause most of the Republican Party to disavow him? It wouldn't surprise me.

If nothing Trump has said so far has caused people to disown him, nothing will.

I think nothing short of openly saying he's racist, or alternately threatening to nuke somewhere in the US, will make the party itself disavow him--it's easier to do this with a statewide candidate than it is with the presidential nominee.

No, he'll stick to safe subjects like bashing Mexicans.

He's already had multiple gaffes even worse than Akin.

Trump blusters through his gaffes and fights for points over "muh context", and that's why he gets away with it. He fights. That's what allows him to do it.

He's said many worse things than Akin.

First off, the apparatus of the political party itself never disavows a candidate from their party, at least not permanently. Yes, there were attempts to get Akin out of the race to get a more moderate republican in there, but once it became too late to do that, the ad money largely came right back to Akin. There was no yuge "republicans for McCaskill" movement, in fact the polls right up to election day generally forecasted a close race. "republicans for McCaskill" was something solely limited to when the voter actually had to cast a ballot for Todd Akin and found themselves mentally unable to do so - it didn't really exist in October of the election year. Same thing with Mourdock - there was no big move to suddenly endorse Donnelly by the state republican party or anyone in party leadership - it was simply the voters finding themselves unable to pull the lever for him on election day. So a scenario in which the republican party fully disavows Trump and outright tells people "Don't vote for him", and keeps on saying that right on to election day, is a complete and total pipe dream.

Second, he already has made an Akin-level gaffe. I would argue he did it on the day he entered the race, when he called mexicans rapists. But you could point to at least four others - saying McCain wasn't a hero, wanting to ban all muslims, changing positions on abortion 5 times in 48 hours, and the judge curiel stuff.

Donald Trump IS Todd Akin on steroids. Granted, everything Trump has said is much worse than Akin's legitimate rape thing. Unlike Trump, Akin apologized, but later rescinded his apology.

But I'm wondering if he will say anything close to the GE that will be so offensive that the entire RNC will abandon him and give Hillary a free ride.

I think Akin's gaffe was worse, if it could even be called a gaffe. I think Akin sounded like a madman.
