How are some of these calculated/estimated when there weren't even any exit polls in 19 states in 2012?

For the first time I have seen, it looks like the NYT's UpShot currently has Hillary at a
90% chance of winning the presidency.

If I can add to that, the democrats currently have a 57% chance of retaking the senate, according to the upshot model.
