Haven't played it in a decade, though.

Online play is so sterile, though. I loved the character of the old PBEM servers I used to play on. (I don't have the patience for PBEM anymore) I also had some great experiences traveling by Greyhound to play at tournaments years ago and I actually won one in Vancouver in 2005 or so.

If there's a few people here who like to play, maybe we could play a private online game...

Btw LLR, your stock went way up in my book.

I was thinking of setting one up once I'm back from vacation in late July, but if people are interested

Axis & Allies is my favorite long game, though I haven't played it for quite some time now.

There are a good number of shorter games that I like, though my "favorite" changes quite a bit, as I progressively get sick of games from playing them too much.  Machi Koro might be my current favorite, if only because I haven't gotten sick of it yet.

I loved both and have the latter myself.  Never bothered to get the former because I never had a place to let it stay unmolested between weekends. EIA is really a college game, as it takes about a semester to play.  PB you can get done in a single session, if players know what they are doing.

We used to run Diplomacy periodically here on the Games board. I've GM'ed before, and am available to do so again. Unfortunately the last attempt in 2012 didn't get past 1901, so it is important to get players who are truly committed for an extended period.

As to the OP question, one of my favorites for a game to play in one short evening is Acquire.

It's a tie between Monopoly and Scrabble.

Twilight Struggle from pure game perspective.

In larger groups probably Avalon.

I also like Axis and Allies.

Tie between chess and Monopoly.
Btw, people seriously don't know the rules of Monopoly.

Notable mention to Colditz.

This. I want to design a variant combination of Diplomacy and Monopoly wherein you have to pay for your moves in Diplomacy with Monopoly money - mostly for sadistic and time-wasting purposes.

I punched a guy once over a game of Diplomacy, I don't mind a well timed backstab but he was just being a douche.
