Only one reported shooter so far who is confirmed to be down, but several witnesses have claimed there were two gunmen apparently. That rumor (obviouslyunconfirmed) and the fact that there was also a controlled explosion conducted by police seem to point to the possibility that this was more than some angry bigoted nutjob.

They keep pushing back the news conference and the FBI are getting involved.

Awful I was at this club before  .    One of the reasons I hate going to clubs is they insist on disarmament.  I never feel comfortable in these situations.

CNN: About 20 killed, 42 hospitalized

http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/12/us/orlando-nightclub-shooting/index.html

Gunman had two weapons: assault rifle and handgun. Apparently an officer responded, it turned into a hostage situation, but the gunman is dead.

EDIT: Gunman was also carrying "a device," per the Orlando Sentinel.

And yet Christina Grimme likely would disagree with you, if she were still alive. The problem here was not too much security, but too little. Had the club been able to go into lockdown mode while the shooter was still outside far fewer would have been hurt.

Sadly, we're gonna get people from all parts of the gun politics spectrum trying to make hay out of this when the tragedy that needs to be most addressed is the thousands who die from guns one or two at a time.

FBI is now investigating is as a terror attack. Irresponsible to speculate, but the target, coupled with the fact that it's LGBT pride month, probably gives us a good idea of what's going on here.

EDIT: County sheriff says "it could definitely be classified as an act of domestic terrorism"

EDIT2: FBI says he likely has "leanings" toward "radical Islamic terrorism" per Jake Tapper

They are saying possible ties to terrorism( leanings towards Islamic ideology).   This is just tragic why would someone target a gay event like this.    As i understand it muslims are extremely anti gay?

Yeah, go ahead and call me a loon but damnt i carry 24/7 whenever and wherever i can.

If it's an Islamic terrorist attack, it would be the worst one on U.S. soil since 9/11, no?

Third deadliest mass shooting in American history (20), behind Virginia Tech (32) and Sandy Hook (26).

I think it'd be the fifth deadliest (non-war-related) "attack" overall (9/11, OKC, plus the two above, and then this one) if I'm not forgetting any others.

You're forgetting the Luby's Cafeteria shooting (23) and the one in the San Ysidro McDonalds in 1984 (21). I feel a bit callous just for saying that Tongue

You're forgetting quite a few.

The over 100 killed in the Mountain Meadows massacre of 1857 and the 44 killed in the Bath School disaster of 1927 which remains the deadliest school incident in U.S. History both come readily to mind.

According to CNN's list, it would be fifth if the number stays at twenty, though could become fourth if the number surpasses twenty-one or third if the number surpasses twenty-three.

Then again, this really isn't the conversation we should be having right now tbh

I believe we're only referring to single attacks committed by one person, or else the massacres of Native Americans, the Revolutionary War, etc. would all count as well.

I actually saw the first breaking reports last night on CNN but I chalked it off as being a random gangland type of shooting and fell asleep for an hour or so. When I woke up again and Afeitch posted this thread and saw that it was actually a gay bar that was attacked, it caught my attention. Frankly my gut reaction upon hearing that this was a mass casualty event was that this was some form of terrorist incident (who knows why or by who?).

Ugh. Terrorism is a sad thing to see happen in Baghdad or Brussels, and particularly horrible when it happens in places like San Bernadino, but when it happens in your own state? It's downright infuriating.

No, you're not callous for saying that, but emojis are a bit uncalled for here.
