Looks like a hate-crime to me.

But instead of a white supremacist from OK etc., it was some (Muslim) guy with a family background from a comparable backwards, bigotted, ignorant place (Afghanistan) who had a grudge against gays ...

So Lyndon, are you saying that any violence not motivated by Islam isn't terrorism? When did you become an Islamaphobe?

Take a hike kid.

You and I both know what this thread would look like if the shooter was some white dude named Timothy Johnson from Alabama.

Unfortunately yes. There are already Republicans out there trying to exploit the situation.

The sad part are that you people are unwilling to use this situation (except for afleitch with his post about giving blood, bless his heart). This is a perfect opportunity to connect anti-LGBT element in USA with Islamic terrorism and being anti-American. But no you people have decided that it's more important to defend a bunch of homophobic assholes, than to use this opportunity to push LGBT rights as a element of western culture to be protected against medieval assholes.

The number of dead will increase beyond 50.

53 in serious condition in hospital.

Just insane.

I don't want to be alarmist, but I sure hope all of our Florida posters are OK.

Looks like this guy had sympathies towards ISIS.

"Florida Sen. Bill Nelson later said that information from intelligence sources indicated there "appears to be a link to Islamic radicalism ... some kind of connection to ISIS."

The media on TV just said a Florida Democrat said he was sympathetic towards ISIS

This kind of hatred towards gays usually comes from religious fundamentalism.

I should add that this fact and the easy access of assault weapons/handguns is always a dangerous combination.

I think the problem isn't that people are allowed to own guns. I think the problem is that right-wing bigots are allowed to own guns.

This kind of hatred towards gays usually comes from religious fundamentalism.

It's even more confused in Afghani culture.

Homosexuality is illegal, often punishable by certain death. It is interpreted together with prostitution and paedophilia.

From Wikipedia:

However, sexual assault of young boys who are kidnapped to act as sexual slaves for adult men is tolerated, typically in a militia, or when an adult man buys sexual favors from young boys with money or gifts.

These paedophile activities are tolerated within Afghan culture because they are not perceived as being an expression of an LGBT-identity, but rather an expression of male power and dominance; as the boy in these situations is forced to assume the "female" role in the relationship.

That is just wrong.

Clearly, this person, Omar Mateen, had a sense of hate towards homosexual men.

Be careful about using photos until we know for sure it's him.

Remember when some magazines used the wrong photos for the Boston Marathon bombers, and the wrong people were brutally bullied, terrorized, and received death threats?

I think the problem is you have people willing to engage in 'going postal' acts of mass murder and self-immolation. The guns just make it easier, but we've just had a guy in the UK convicted of attempted for trying it with a knife at an Underground station.

The problem is the high prevalance of religious bigotry and easy access to weapons of mass destruction.

I think both should be reigned in significantly. People need to lay off the religion and gun whoreship in general.

He was 29, US born, from New York and by the pictures of his home, was well off (he was married); several cars in the drive and it was noted that he may had owned other properties.

Yeah, but with a knife you definitely won't kill 50+ people ...

Also deeply sad is that club goers are wanting to donate blood for their friends. But can't.

I wonder if this could be the impetus to change that nonsensical policy.

Even in countries with gun control, we see the use (illegal obtained) guns in terror act, the main difference is that the people usiong them, usual lack training and practice, which is why we usual see lower body count in those cases (compared to USA), where they decides to use guns instead of explosives. Breivik is more or less the main exception.

What a "rationale" behind this anyway?

I have heard that they have now temporarily suspended this with blood being screened 'the usual way'; which should be the case anyway.

Ugh..... this guy wasn't some right wing hillbilly, he was a supporter of an ideology inspired by a foreign terrorist organization.

Gay men were banned from donating blood for life until last year, when the FDA changed its policy. However, you still have to wait a year after having gay sex to give blood.

I had no idea. That's just troubling. It's creating a stigma on people because of their sexual orientation. And beside, isn't any donated blood suppoused to be tested?

So, I suppouse ISIS is a bunch of left-leaning liberals then?
