Since I have an arch-Austrian/Bavarian last name, obviously in Austria.

In the US, my last name is most common in Wisconsin.

The last name from my mother's side is also an arch-Austrian/Bavarian last name and most common in Iowa.

Interestingly, my last name's relative frequency is 2nd-highest in Israel, after Austria. And the frequency almost matches the Austrian level ...

I thought it would be the US or Germany ...

Using Google, there are actually a ton of people in Israel with my last name.

There are probably more than that, because these websites often use phonebook entries and many people are not in a phonebook.

Kentucky has the highest percentage with my surname, Dunn, close to 0.1% of the population. In New York, it's less than 0.05%.  The "country" with the highest percentage is Scotland, with Australia close behind. Northumberland, England, in its NE corner, has the highest frequency on earth, about .33% of the population.

USA, Myanmar (?), Egypt, Pakistan, Nigeria, England, Iraq, Syria, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia

No idea why my name is so common in the middle east (It's a completely white name, afaik)...

And in the US: California by number, Tennessee by frequency. (And by rank, West Virginia)

There are (apparently) 796 people in total on earth that bear my last name, 550 of which in Austria and 235 in Germany, which is not really surprising. Other than that, there are four in Canada, two in Czechia, and one in each in Switzerland, England, the US, New Zealand, and, surprisingly, Burkina Faso.

Appalachia, which is unsurprising given it's heavily Scottish and Northern Irish incidence. Within the UK it is most common in Argyll, again unsurprising, since that is where my ancestors are from Tongue

Here you can look in which Austrian districts your last name is most common:

http://namenskarten.lima-city.at

My last name is most common in Zell am See district (what a surprise Tongue), my mother's last name in Innsbruck-suburbs.

Don't know really how exact that is, because I typed in "Van der Bellen" and there seem to be only a few VdB's in Burgenland and nowhere else.

But our next President actually lives in Vienna now and lived in Tyrol before ...

By amount: Texas
By frequency: Kentucky

By country, it is most common in the US by amount, and most common in Northern Ireland by density.

Also, about 130,000 people have my last name.

Also tried this with my original (un-Americanized) name

Most common in Germany and the US

Densest in Israel

By state:
Common: New York
Density: Wisconsin

The name is Lithuanian, so of course the Lithuanian population with it is 0 Tongue

Weirdly different results from my actual last name, go figure.

I did all 4 grandparents.

H:  41,000 worldwide.  An English surname, so no surprises.  45% of incidents are in the United States, 19% in England, and 18% in South Africa.

B:  12,000 worldwide, 98% in the United States.  I thought this name was Scottish--my immigrant ancestor's first name was Duncan--but the website records only one incident in Scotland.  (Apparently, I should be looking for my ancestry in Essex.)

Z:  I combined two equally-common spellings to get 6100 worldwide.  45% were in Germany, 24% in the United States, and 23% in Austria.  The name originates near Germany's border with Luxembourg, so I'm wondering if the Austrians are descended from post-WWII Eastern European refugees.

K:  1300 worldwide.  The name originates in Czechia, near the Polish border, but it seems to have died out there.  Current distribution is 35% in Austria, 24% in the United States, 21% in Hungary, 11% in Germany, and 9% in Brazil.

78 people have my last name, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's all people in my family. It has an unusual spelling caused by an error at Ellis Island, so it doesn't really have natural spelling roots. The 77 people in the state level map are only in states where I have known family living, so that's probably my family members with the exception of one person from Brazil.

California beats New York by 2! Grrrrrrr. Very upset about that. At least Italy beats out Israel (though not in density).

I should just change to my mom's name already, where Italy, PA, and NY are the decisive winners. One day.
