He's not running for reelection again, he's going into the Clinton cabinet.
As what??

Malloy is a pretty great campaigner, though his reelection bid was pretty similar to Truman 1948.
I suspect Rauner will win the same way in 2018.

So what did Malloy do to piss off his state so much?

Be a partisan nightmare to small businesses that hates guns (we have more gun owners than you think) and repeats a failed tax and spend model. Not to mention slashing hospitals.
This.  He's probably the worst governor in the country right now.

Governors rarely lose re-election.
Tell that to Jon Corzine, Ted Strickland, Chet Culver, Sean Parnell, Pat Quinn, and Tom Corbett.
The term "rarely" means that it sometimes happens.

Malloy is not a charismatic or personable guy. He never built the relationships he needed with his own Democratic majority in the legislature to win allegiance for his policies. Since many of the top Democrats in the General Assembly are former public-sector employees or have ties to unions, Malloy's demands for concessions from labor were received very poorly. To them, it looks like Malloy wants to fund millions in tax incentives to keep corporations within the state and build ludicrous transportation projects (busway to nowhere, lane expansion on I-95) by cutting pensions for cops and nurses.

Malloy also put some pretty incompetent people in charge of the DMV. People have to take time off from work so that they can wait in line in Wethersfield - routine transactions take two to three hours.

There's also a huge budget deficit in Connecticut and it costs a fortune to live here. 0.03% of Hartford's population was a victim of homicide in 2015. The new minor league baseball team will probably not play a home game this year because the stadium still isn't finished. People hate living in Connecticut, and they certainly have never liked Malloy - they only elected him because his opponent was a rich douchebag who the Republicans insisted on nominating twice over. If Grandma Rell wanted the Governor's Mansion back, it would undoubtedly be hers.

I wouldn't call it rare, though.  It seems like at least one incumbent governor loses every midterm cycle.  And if any incumbent (governor, senator, president, or otherwise) is unpopular enough, the advantages of incumbency don't mean all that much.

In 2014, three out of thirty-six gubernatorial elections were an incumbent losing. Since eight governors retired that time, it's really three out of twenty-eight. One in nine roughly isn't very good odds, but it's not "rare".
