This is probably more coverage than every other 3rd party candidate has had put together since Nader in 2000.

Was Nader heavily covered in 2000 pre-recount? I was too young to remember at the time.

Not really. Nader's mega rally in Madison Square Garden got a little bit of coverage and was broadcast on CSPAN, but he was largely ignored for the entire campaign. All things considered 3% wasn't a bad showing.

Nader was actually interviewed on CNN on election night 2000. In 2004 CNN included him when displaying the NPV. Contrast to 2012, when Johnson wasn't mentioned at all.

Nader certainly got enough media coverage in 2000 for many/most voters to know that he was running.  There were jokes about him on Saturday Night Live, for example, that didn't have to stop to explain that he was a candidate for president.  It was assumed that the audience knew.  And yeah, contrast that with Johnson (or any other 3rd party candidate) in 2012, when 90%+ of the voters had no clue who he was, or that he was running for president.

Hillary will have an absolute temper tantrum if Johnson meets the 15% threshold to be on stage.

Is there any scenario under which Trump pushes for Johnson to be included in a debate (or maybe both Johnson and Stein)?  Will he want to avoid a one-on-one with Clinton, or will he relish it?  Or maybe he just starts throwing up random demands for the debates to create confusion, and one of them involves the participation of third party candidates?

This will be interesting to watch. The more Johnson has airtime, the more people will have a 3rd alternative to Trump and Clinton.

If he does, he's an absolute moron, as Johnson will peel more votes away from him than Clinton.

I would probably never vote for Johnson but I'm glad to hear this news because I think his ideas deserve to be heard and would add to the national discussion.

I imagine it'll end up being like it was in 1980. Reagan would only debate with Anderson, Carter would only debate without Anderson. Trump will only debate with Johnson, Hillary will only debate without Johnson. Trump can't handle a 1-on-1 debate, Hillary needs it.

Regarding Johnson pulling more from Trump than Clinton. It really depends on the state, in some he pulls more from Hillary in others he pulls more from Trump. They both need him.

Almost definitely ulterior corporatist donor motives at work here.

Most polling analysis at the moment shows him taking slightly more from Clinton, nationally, but more from Trump in Utah, the only state with that level of analysis.

I think maybe CNN would like to have this thing called ratings.

Didn't that end with Reagan and Anderson debating without Carter? That would be a disaster for Trump since Johnson can plausibly attack Trump from both the right and from the left, and people would realize some third party asterisk candidate looked more presidential than the Republican nominee.

Whatever happens, a Hillary-versus-Johnson debate would probably be the most boring thing ever and viewership would plummet. It would basically be Hillary giving a monologue about Trump's hate speech and "standing up to Wall Street" and occasionally gesturing to Johnson and being like, "Who did you say you were, again?" The foreign policy portion of the debate would get really weird really fast as you had the Democratic nominee sounding more like a Republican than the former Republican governor standing on stage with her.

Damn, I just looked on RCP and I guess that's right!  A little surprised!

If I've learned one thing about this cycle, it's that ratings are more important to the news media than zany type of political agenda.

Why? He'd draw more from Trump and the two could tag team the Donald.
