They check off all the boxes for being predisposed to voting Republican:
* Non-Hispanic White
* German ancestry
* Rural
* Regular church attendance
* High college completion rate
* Extractive resources (in Kansas and North Dakota)
* Large-scale farming and ranching (they dislike the Democrats' environmentalism)
* Little to no history of organized labor

Why does college completion rate matter, IndyTX?  I agree with all your other reasons though.

Why does college completion rate matter, IndyTX?  I agree with all your other reasons though.

I'd guess because fields that require graduate degrees are more lacking in the Plains, and Whites with bachelor's degrees are a heavily Republican demographic.

EDIT: I'd also guess there's at least a loose correlation between completing college and coming from an affluent background.
