FDR decides to retire and the Democratic Convention is deadlocked between Henry Wallace, James Byrnes and Alben Barkley. Harry S. Truman is nominated as a dark horse compromise candidate and faces Bob Taft in the general election. How does that election turn out?

I think that Truman would have chosen a northern running mate. In 1944, he was selected as VP to appease the southerners who had reservations with FDR. Back then, was more seen as moderate and not as a liberal. He turned out to be more of a liberal after he got into the Oval Office.
