Anyone else surprised Chris Murphy's filibuster was successful?

He held up the bill to protest, to say that Congress should be allowed to vote on some gun violence measures.

Republicans have conceded, and will now hold the votes.

I'm genuinely surprised. Chris Murphy did it.

No more surprised than I was when I noticed Democrats and Republicans exploiting death and violence in order to pursue their respective legislative agendas, which is to say, not surprised at all.

They're all sensationalistic and reactionary.  It's the fashion now, I suppose.  Whether or not Murphy's agenda is a good idea or a misguided idea is another matter, worthy of its own debate, but legislation made in reaction and in haste is generally bad legislation.  Hopefully no bill will be passed, and there will be a cooling off period before this important issue is brought up again.

It's good to see that the Republicans are starting to see sense on this important issue.

If the bill passes, then I'd say he was successful.  If not, then it's just posturing for elections on both sides.
I think the vote itself will be a success. Then we can see where everyone falls, and campaign accordingly.

Sort of like a waiting period for gun purchases!

These reforms have been discussed about for years now, if that's your definition of haste then I don't know what to tell you.

I still oppose the proposal, but I was rooting for Murphy. Anyone who filibusters that long should at least be heard.

No, as the Republican position is impopular, they usually just bury things and go on something else. They can't do that with a talking filibuster. They had to do something to not look bad.

No. We are always on the right side of history, as usual.  When Republicans filibuster, democrats refuse to listen.  Sad!

Yes, and I'm hopeful that we can get some actual results out of this.

All four amendments fail.

So now Democrats have Trump, SCOTUS obstruction, and overwhelmingly supported gun measures to run on.  Awesome.

And probably the only one that people would vote differently than normal about no matter what the politician is saying is Trump.

Not agreeing with her vote, but you realize that Democrats from upper New England are pretty conservative on gun rights, too, right?

They're moderate enough on this issue where its hurting Ayotte's numbers.

Honestly, after watching Reid's "just don't vote on anything" strategy fail terribly in 2014, McConnell may as well have his members take some tough votes and see how it works out.

Both parties voted down the other sides bills, 2 on each side.  Both parties are part of the problem.  The Democrats say they voted against the Republicans bills because they were too weak, so I guess nothing is preferable than anything at all to them?

Well yeah, both sides are posturing but the idea that someone should vote for any old thing just to say they passed a bill is crazy.  Of course, if you don't think a bill is going to do anything good for the American people, you shouldn't vote for it.  Personally, I only would have voted for 1 out of the 4 things they proposed.
