Washington, Imo. Not that George wasn't a decent guy, just ... why?

Yeah, I do find it a bit weird/amusing that this state is named after a guy who never set foot anywhere near it during his lifetime.

Kentucky, haha.  Sorry to our great Kentuckians here (and I like the state!), but it's hard to avoid sounding silly saying it.

Arkansas. Spelled stupidly based off pronunciation(slient S? Really?) and Kansas proper got it right. Name also doesn't sound good.

Washington should be named something like Columbia, Rainier, Cascadia, Olympia, Salish, etc.

Massachusetts. It's unnecessarily long for such a small state, and unlike California, isn't phonetic. Make it easier for kids and rename it Plymouth, Mayflower, or Blue Hill. That all being said, I like that it is named after the local indigenous colony Massachusett (thank you Wikipedia), but I still think such an important state could have a simpler name.

As a Massachusettensian, I resent that.

Rhode Island is an island.   Rhode Island and Providence Plantations is a state.

Rhode Island is an island.   Rhode Island and Providence Plantations is a state.

And yet the whole thing is usually called Rhode Island, even the non-island parts.

Providence would've made more sense as a whole.

Massachusetts is perfectly phonetic. What kind of non-phonetic way do you pronounce it?
