Would the British departure from the European Union increase nationalist/nativist sentiment in the United States, helping Donald Trump?

Frankly, the average undecided American voter doesn't care about things that don't directly affect their country. Unless the outcome of the Brexit vote has a significant impact on the global economy, most Americans won't think much of it.

British membership in the EU provides the easiest gateway for American corporations to enter European markets, thanks to language and cultural ties between the US and UK.  It would certainly have a negative impact on us.

If you asked the majority of Americans their thoughts on Brexit, they'd ask what it is.

The answer is yes. The main effect would be on the economy and a bad economy hurts Clinton. While it is hard to estimate how badly a brexit would hurt the global economy there is zero doubt that the effect would be negative. A further effect could be the nationalist sentiment, but that is less certain.

Trump, the PRESUMPTIVE NOMINEE HIMSELF, didn't even know what the word meant until a reporter had to tell him!  You think your average swing voter is going to know what it is, or what the EU is even about?

It would help in as much as Trump could try and justify his protectionist stance, from a policy perspective. Then again, Trump and policy in the same sentence.... Smiley.

Realistically, it will have none to minimal impact on the election.

Brexit would indirectly help Trump if it caused a recession, but otherwise wouldn't have much of an effect.

Brexit would most likely cause a huge recession, which would immensely help Donald Trump.

Surprised the "Remain" side hasn't made a big point of this. "Leaving = Trump wins" would be a convincing argument to lots of people on the fence.

That would be fearmongering at its worst, and voters would not only see right through it, but probably resent it.

Yes, because fearmongering in politics never works. See: 2004 US Presidential Election

UK != US.  Cameron almost lost Scotland because he resorted to fearmongering.

My tire on my car blew out last week and I had to get a new one....I wonder if that would help Trump?

C'mon, this would clearly help Trump. But it won't happen anyway so it doesn't matter.

Why would it help Trump unless it managed to so completely collapse the world economy that any and all anti-establishment figure would win? Wouldn't a Brexit also help to fearmonger against evil nationalist forces and bring Sanders supporters into the fold?

I'd be surprised if Brexit resulted in a recession in the rest of the EU, much less the US. No impact.

I think a Brexit would embolden nationalist sentiment.  Trump's tweet on a successful Brexit vote would look something like this:

People already voting for him would love that yes but anyone who doesn't would just shake their head and think "he's being dumb again"

I don't think the act of voting to leave itself will help Trump, but it's very likely there will be economic fallout and probably a recession which will guarantee his winning.

Only Trump would think that the EU has anything to do with Sharia.

This is a warning for the US.... don't over-estimate the voting public
