Will the GOP get away with blaming a Brexit-caused Recession on Obama/Hillary?

We all know they'll try, if there's a recession or even just a slowdown caused by the Brexit. But will they succeed in convincing the public it's Obama's/Hillary's fault?

Unfortunately, yes. Fortunately, even that might not be enough for Trump to win. Ironically, if Trump does win, it will cause further economic collapse across the world.

Yes.  You live in this country, right?  Voters are like "muh, economy bad, President party no good, different party now, muh."

It might not be enough if Trump runs an extremely inept campaign, though.

Yes, but the economic shock of a Brexit on the US is minimal, so not much of a concern.

So then it definitely won't be enough? Tongue

As for this issue, of course. The president takes the blame for most major issues like this. That's why the party which holds the White House tends to perform worse in the midterms. People hold small grievances that build up over time and are fertile for the opposition to weaponize. Basically, voters are disengaged and gullible enough to point fingers at the guy at the top, regardless if it was their fault or if they even had anything at all to do with it. Ignorance of how government works is wonderful. For Hillary, since her success is in many ways linked to Obama, it will hurt her too.

As for the potential recession's effects on the election, the intensity and duration of the recession will matter a good bit. Plus, what are the chances that if there was going to be a recession, that it would happen in time for the elections? I don't know the answer to that, but we'll have to see how things play out. I don't know if this will have any serious effect on our economy, but Trump would likely benefit less from a smaller recession than an average Republican with no major issues would.

You forget that an insanely high percentage of voters believe the US economy is currently terrible.

There's about a 0% chance Brexit will cause a recession in the US. Actually in the short term it'll probably be a boost to the US and all non-UK countries since the pound has gone tumbling and is now at the lowest since 1985, so American companies can invest in Britain far cheaper and British companies are on far weaker grounds for competition and bidding. So for now Britain's loss is our gain.

It becomes much harder to export American goods to both the UK and Europe now with their currency's plummeting.
