1. Give the 2 year notice of intent to leave the EU
2. Hold a referendum in Scotland that says IF the UK leaves the EU, do you want Scotland to become independent and stay in the EU. This presumably passes easily.
3. Now, have another UK wide referendum to confirm whether the UK should in fact leave the EU. It's pretty clear at this point that voting for the UK to leave EU is also voting for Scotland to secede.

But why should the UK be in the EU?

Although I like this plan as it would essentially give the whole of the UK a vote on whether Scotland should secede or not, I can't see it happening. The SNP obviously value a union with Europe more than with the rest of the UK, so why take a chance on the UK voting on a 2nd referendum over EU membership? If the UK says "fine, we'll stay in the EU to keep our own union intact" then Scottish independence is doomed.

Apparently, invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty cannot be reversed. So, that's not an option.

This could be politically feasible if Lab+Lib Dem win a majority after a snap election (they won't be able to count on SNP), but only if Corbyn is replaced.

Yep. And that only if Article 50 is not invoked beforehand.

The European Council can unanimously choose to delay it, and so it would make sense that they could together with the UK Prime Minister or Queen could just cancel it.

What about this

(1) HM's Government negotiates an "exit package" from the EU
(2) Said "exit package" is presented to the British people in a non-binding referendum in 2018 or 2019
(3) British people reject "exit package"
(4) Because the people did not accept the exit package, UK stays in the EU

The exit package referendum could even be paired with a second question asking the British people whether they want to "renegotiate" the package or "maintain current status"
