McCain was a respectable Republican before he picked Palin, and really if any other candidate of  '08 had run, they probably would've been Goldwatered .

That and Obama was still seen as an inexperienced flip-flop.

With the current climate, trump keeps alienating someone, and Clinton is at least seen as experienced and likely to get some things done if not all.
