A segment of Hillary's '08 voters were part of an older Democratic coalition. Whiter, more working class, more receptive to Republicans, and really, they pretty much are now (even if they're still registered as Democrats in states like West Virginia, Kentucky and Oklahoma). So when their choice was some old white guy and a young, more... urban candidate, they went with the old white guy. At least before the crash happened.
