Another blow today to the Jesus coalition of the Republican Party. Keep praying, holy rollers!

Someone get Kim Davis on the phone for her reaction.

They will no doubt whinge over how awful it is that they are expected to engage in their civic duty. "Not getting exemptions from performing my job because I find gays icky? How inhumane!" Get somebody else to sign off on it then, or better yet, don't sign up for an office that you won't be capable of serving to the utmost capacity.

Why did the court grant standing for this?  Shouldn't they need an individual who was negatively impacted by this law?

Before you make fun of Kim Davis for no reason, note that her issue was that she felt that the state should provide her a religious exemption and allow her office to issue marriage licenses without her name on them. She did not have a problem with other people in her office issuing the licenses as long as her name was not on the paper. She actually opposed a bill proposed by KY Republicans that would have created a separate marriage license form for same-sex couples because she said she did not believe in "separate but equal marriage" and said that all couples should use one, inclusive form. She's not a hateful person - don't turn her into a punching bag.

That bill is only becoming law on July 1st, and there various groups who filled injunctions to stop parts of the future law from being ever applied (before it impacted anymore negatively).

Are we already rewriting this?  When U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning held Davis in contempt of court, he said he would save her from jail if she simply allowed her deputies to issue the marriage licenses. She refused.

She was only released when she agreed to let her deputies do their job.

She refused to allow her deputies to issue the licenses because they had her name on them. She asked that the licenses be issued without her name on them. After Matt Bevin's election, they changed the forms to exclude the clerk's name from marriage licenses, and her office is now functioning just like any other clerk's office in KY.

I like how conservatives who generally believe workers have no rights to collective bargaining, or other key legal protections, proudly stand behind a government employee of all people, as long as they fight their pointless draconian culture wars for them. If the county clerk in question was a Muslim woman who didn't want her name on same-sex marriage licenses, we'd hear the old "just shut up and do your job" spiel they give the rest of us.

I'm sure some on the regressive left would defend her.

Yes, conservatives always like to have it both ways with it comes to those nasty homosexuals.

Before Orlando, they were getting their support hoses in a wad worrying about gender-neutral bathrooms while celebrating Muhammad Ali; after Orlando, they were suddenly "thinking and praying for" the gays while bashing Muslims.

Conservatives want the government to stay out of the economic/private sector but when those businesses relocate to states that don't have anti-LGBT laws, conservatives say that businesses are being big bullies.

So yeah, conservatives are the most hypocritical of hypocrites.

You must have missed it - we are a proud national worker's party now. The days of Scott Walker are long gone.

Doubtful. I remember a story on DU about a Muslim flight attendant for a small regional airport that was fighting to be able to refuse to serve alcohol on flights (she had already worked the job for awhile and had done so but now converted to Islam.) Everyone was against her and demanded she just do her job.

He was a Walker fan a little over a year back, so don't think he won't megashift once this election's over. Tongue

That's not how this works.  That's not how any of this works.  That line of logic would allow government workers an insane amount of power.  If a clerk somewhere denied someone a CCW permit on the grounds that they think guns are immoral and are against the clerk's religion, these same people would be (rightfully) up in arms (no pun intended) that a Second Amendment violation had occurred.

Honestly, the same sex marriage issue has brought out more constitutional hypocrisy in Republicans than any recent issue that I can think of.
