Can somebody explain to me what wing of the Labour Party Eagle belongs to? Burnham's?

Soft left, as are Owen Smith and Lisa Nandy. Burnham and Watson are on the traditional right.

well there are a quite a lot of affluent middle class in north london,

Yeah but they don't form the core of the Labour vote there, which is comprised of people (of whatever ethnicity) on the estates and usually working class minority voters off them. Your stereotypical Grauniad reading suburbs are capable of voting Labour but are not exactly reliable...

Labour only holds this seat because of the peripheral estates.

Other than the tiny gentrified bubble in the city centre (which isn't very Labour and has very low turnouts) this is one of the most deprived and working class places in the country...

The reliably Labour parts of Oxford are (as in Cambridge) the proletarian parts, which are larger in Oxford because of the motor works.

A depressed postindustrial city. The middle class bits mostly don't vote Labour and in the case of Gosforth (the only truly affluent part) never.

Where Labour is strongest on the estates and in the various grotty inner city districts.

People, stop reading the referendum results into normal UK elections, the two have no relation with each other.

It's funny. During the post Iraq years people probably thought the Bobo vote was permanently lost to the Lib Dems. Now, the Natrative That We Must Accept is that bobos are now the core Labour vote!

It has fallen out of favour but if it does return 10 points for that 1970s classic...

Thank you for pointing that out, i've always thought labour voters in north london are combinations latte liberals, affluent middle class and jewish voters.

The Tories had been making steady gains in the later group in
Recent years so I reckon it's 50-50 in the Jewish vote (Lib Dem never had a large traction for Jews for obvious reasons)

Apart from in local elections (and local elections only) in parts of Barnet but that's dying out (possibly literally).

Anyway tomorrow is supposed to be NEC Hot Mess day. Looking forward to it? I'm not! But as well as the vexed matter of ballot access there are other issues relating to a contest that would have to be debated and they could also be important; e.g. cutoff point for new members to be allowed to vote, the exact amount Registered Supporters should have to pay, etc.

Tbh registered supporters should have to pay more, to at least get staff in who can vet them

It is quite possible that he will be but please never again report journalistic gossip as certain fact. The NEC have not yet met.

Has anyone seen Eagle's Launch/Sunday TV interviews? They're awful. Even in her launch she failed to put forward anything other than 'I'm not Jeremy'

I expect if Owen launches he'll make a dig- and basically say 'we need to have someone with a vision, not just an opposition' ( I should be a speech writer Tongue)

As I've said about 100 times Smith ticks a lot of boxes that Eagle doesn't- 1.) didn't vote for Iraq/Syria 2.) Is a much better speaker 3.) Was actually touted as leadership material before

If Angela Eagle won the the labour leadership, she would be the first leader from LGBT community in the labour party and second in the UK after Ruth Davidson.

And almost no one has made anything of that fact. How times have changed since Bermondsey.

Strictly speaking that accolade goes to Patrick Harvie as co-convener (read; basically the leader but the Greens are being all feminist share circle about it) of the Scottish Greens since 2008.

But yes, it's nice to live in a very female and very gay phase of British politics right now.

If you're counting Ruth Davidson then you surely have to count Kezia Dugdale (leader of Scottish Labour): and if you go to parties outside the big 2 then you have a few others - Pat Harvie comes to mind for a start...

Some bozo has commissioned YouGov to do a survey of members of some large affiliated TUs. The numbers are less than wonderful for the incumbent. Full gory details are here.

What do these people think they're doing?  Because what they are doing is helping the Tories remain in power until 2025, if not longer.

I think the best case scenario at the moment is that the NEC allows Corbyn onto the ballot and that he loses fair and square without any court battles.  But I'm not feeling very optimistic.
