No, no, no, no, no. The Taffia are people like Ffion Hague. Dai Smith's son would never be allowed to become a member; entire bloodline blacklisted...

Indeed. We (by which I mean 'the Welsh') want our Party back, lol.

If Smith beats Corbyn thanks to Welsh voters, England should really thank the heavens that at least you don't want to leave! Wink

It's a pity that the attempted Welsh takeover of the Conservative party failed so dismally.

If Owen Smith loses to Jeremy Corbyn, but wins among Welsh Labour members, will Leanne Wood demand an independence referendum for Wales? Tongue

The current Labour elite makes Ed Miliband look like a major heavyweight. Who would have thought that in early 2015.

Times piece tomorrow has Corbyn's team attack Smith as 'Blair-lite' who supports selling off the NHS... interesting how they're trying to define him early

She should! Everybody leave the sinking ship England if that happens.

He's such a terrible untrustworthy Blairite who can't be trusted with any aspect of our beloved Welfare State that Corbyn appointed him to shadow the Tories on Welfare. Wait...

I can't help but feel a victory for Owen would be a hollow and listless one.  I've never seen such a transparent voter suppression effort:

It's not voter suppression; I've honestly always said this- it's the activists who have to take the burden of the party, who pay the fees and basically put in the work- you shouldn't just be able to pay 3 quid and walk away (which is what 98% of Corbyn voters I know have done)

The thing about the three quid system was that it didn't even pay for itself. Personally I would abolish the Registered Supporters scheme entirely but if you're going to have it then it has to be economic. Labour's finances are better than they were but are still not exactly in rude health.

150,000 signed up- netting the party a fair bit of money.

I signed up my sister, and mum but they're probably the only two registered supporters who aren't voting for JC

So what do you guys think of Owen Smith? I haven't followed things especially closely, but I know most of the major drama in this leadership crisis and now election.

Eh... a lot of the RS's from last time joined the party after Corbyn was elected and this time round there has been a push for people to become RS from other elements so it probably won't be quite so lopsided. Going to be tricky to measure accurately actually.

I wonder how many people will end up getting disqualified though?

So given the inevitable Corbyn victory and with the PLP finding the position untenable we get SDP mark 2, except with 100-150 defectors becoming the official opposition, who will be elected as 'Not The Labour Party' leader? Someone who actually wants it rather than a former stalking horse?

If he does win again you're more likely to see him get his old demand for annual leadership elections.

If  Corbyn wins then I think the PLP should just accept that in next election LAB will be led by  Corbyn  which would most likely mean defeat.  But after that  Corbyn will step down and PLP/LAB can start afresh. Anything other attempt to bring down  Corbyn would just mean a post- general election defeat recovery is just that much harder because so much bad blood would have been spilled.

The general attitude at present is one of extreme bloody mindedness on most sides. Just the way things are.

According to twitter there are 183,541 registered supporters who signed up. That's a solid £4.6 million for the party.

According to Ian Martins' book (which is a great read on Labour) 57,000 were rejected last year. I expect it could be higher as they're actually prepared for it, and actually have money this time.

Tbh this is just going to be a last stand; the entire anti- Corbyn faction is united around a genuine left winger, who wasn't around for Iraq and is actually good a speaker, likely to be backed by GBM (with 600,000 trade unionists).

If Smith doesn't win then no-one will

I assume signed up means paying the one time £25 fee to become a “registered supporter”? Are all of them people who joined before Jan 2016?  I wonder which side this expansion of the electorate will help?
