Trump is doing the same thing he did during the primary - waiting until late in the game to advertise on TV.  Trump let the others, especially Rubio, advertise in primary states for weeks or even months before he came with a substantial ad buy the last two weeks or so before the election.

He also led in the vast majority of primary polls from September 2015 onwards....the same isn't the case now.

Not in every state, which is really the only thing that matters when making local ad buys.  Trump still stuck to pretty much the same ad buy strategy regardless of the primary polls (unless he was really far behind, in which case he didn't buy any) - come in late and substantial.  Whether it will work this time is obviously an open question.  But Trump is not changing his ad buy strategy from the primaries.

IIRC, the Romney campaign said after the fact in 2012 that Obama's ad buys really did them in in a couple of states - specifically early-morning ads targeted at the elderly. It appears Trump didn't learn this lesson.

I have to say that I actually agree with Ljube - what will matter is voter turnout operations and ground game. Luckily, Clinton will also be out-manning Trump by a lot in that department too.

I'm beginning to think that Trump really doesn't give a f--k about whether or not he wins. He knows he's started a movement, and it'll only get bigger.

They're overrated when both sides are using them, as it ends up largely being an inflationary effect that cancels out your opponent's potential advantage from using them. When it is entirely lopsided, however, they provide very real benefits to the winning side. This effect is observed in just about every aspect of a campaign in terms of field ops or media: even with freaking yard signs.

Reminds me when this site was so happy (or upset, depending on who was talking) that Corbett wasn't airing many ads in Pennsylvania in early 2014 when Wolf was monopolizing the airwaves.

I'd argue ads aren't irrelevant when one candidate is literally spending nothing on them.

Ads aren't the end-all-be-all, but....

Good Hillary ads - 0 trump ads + solid, established Democratic ground game - amateur-hour trump ground game + loads of Clinton Cash reserves - (trumps inability to raise money + unwillingness to spend his own money) = undeniable advantages in logistics that is going to make it very hard for a certain blowhard to win in places that Republicans haven't been able to win in decades

Oh and if trump is hoping to counter all of those things with free news coverage, its not going to go that well when you have idiotic prostitutes like Katrina Pierson speaking on your behalf. Meanwhile, Hillary has surrogates that....don't constantly vomit over themselves with stupidity...

Trump is not Romney. Just about everyone knew who he was before the primaries and after.

As such, Trump's pretty well defined already. Romney got slammed with the Bain Capital stuff and was defined as the moneybags candidate this time last cycle, (which is why I thought he was a TERRIBLE candidate).

It's not as easy defining Trump. People already associated him with "You're Fired!" prior to the election and they know he wants to build a wall and get Mexico to pay for it.

No worries, Trump has already defined himself just fine as a bigoted loser candidate incapable of leading in any polls for longer than a few days.

I'll like to make an observation:

If Clinton can lock up FL, WI and PA, she wins.
If she locks up FL, WI and OH, she wins.
If she locks up FL, WI, VA and NV, she wins.

WI looks to be gone for Trump. FL looks to be trending away from Trump. I know I would rather be in Clinton's position right now. They are definitely going for the kill in FL.

Trump is raising money, but how much of that money is going to go to ads and ground game?

Remember that when you try to advocate for women on Hillary's behalf. Because clearly it only matters when it's women you like.
