Mitt Romney's family is still pleading for him to mount an independent bid for the presidency, the 2012 Republican nominee said Wednesday.

Mitt Romney's family is still pleading for him to mount an independent bid for the presidency, the 2012 Republican nominee said Wednesday.

Romney, speaking to CBS News' John Dickerson at the Aspen Ideas Festival, said a son asked him as recently as Tuesday to do so.

Romney may be running the ultimate stealth campaign, particularly if (A) the delegates in Cleveland dump Trump and (B) they turn to HIM, THE MITT ROMNEY as their party's savior.

Maybe Romney's family should have let him know their wishes a bit earlier, no? That way, Mitt could have gone through the process, instead of having to sit on the sidelines throwing stones this time around. Sorry, but the GOP presented folks with 17 different people to choose from for their candidate in the 2016 election cycle, and Trump came out on top. Romney seems to want to continue to bash Trump, despite Trump winning the nomination in a fairly decisive way. Maybe Romney should just join the Clinton campaign as one of their spokesmen.

Romney is a delusional asshat. His "family" may want him to run, but that loser didn't earn the nomination and the window to run as a third party candidate in a number of states is dwindling.

If Romney wasn't flirting with the idea of entering at a brokered convention (which could possibly happen if the delegates are unbound), he wouldn't have said this. He's not just attention-whoring. He has no need to do that other than fueling his last ditch ambition for the Presidency.

I think it's fairly obvious that his entire plan this election has been to slide in through the back door.

IIRC, several polls had Romney even more unpopular than Trump among GOP primary voters.

If Mitt wanted to run, he had plenty of opportunity to do so a year ago. At this point he'd only play spoiler and get Hillary elected, which is fine if that's his goal.

A year ago, he didn't think Trump would be the nominee.  Now that he is the nominee, it's quite possible that Romney regrets not running.

You forget that Jeb! basically bullied him out of the race by strong-arming all the donors and operatives. Mitt couldn't run because there was no one left to hit up for money and no one left to hire - they were all working for Jeb.

In all fairness, Romney would have a better chance to the White House than Little-Hands-Drumpf-Fuhrer.

Mitt has no interest in being a third party or independent candidate.  He has interest in being the GOP nominee, and it's not impossible for that to happen for him.  Indeed, the chances of Romney being the nominee at the convention is better than his chances of getting on the ballot in 50 states and polling high enough to be included in the debates.

It COULD happen.  COULD.  Almost definitely WON'T.

Nobody wants Mitt Romney to run again.  I voted for him, and would again in if he were the nominee.  But I'm excited to see what Trump can do.  Now that he's come this far, why go back?
