Can't this just bolster his narrative? I.e. "these establishment politicians are so awful, I just couldn't vote for any of them, folks!" Very few people he's trying to appeal to will care about this if it's true.

I'm not sure that people won't care about this. Meg Whitman was hit hard for not voting for years until she ran for Governor. With Trump already having a poor image, I think that this is just another negative against him.
