Why or why not? I personally don't because it doesn't allow the student to face the reality of the world.

I don't give a damn either way. If a college wants to make safe spaces, so be it. If a college does not want any safe spaces, then I'm fine with that as well.

No, because the real world has no safe spaces.

Of course not. Just make a private club and don't invite who you disagree with.

Safe spaces are antithetical to the whole point of colleges, so no.

Of course not -I never even heard of this notion (or whatever the predecessor of it was) when I was an undergrad at the University of Washington.

I said no, because in this context safe space is basically just code for thought police. Clearly its fine for professors to voluntarily put those stickers on their door and invite kids with problems to talk and not feel judged during the private conversation. Public events and public locations, as well as classroom curriculum and discussions are different.

I don't really, but I also don't care and still find it hilarious people not in university (who presumably have like six million other things to think about) give a crap either way.

Do the safe spaces with warm milk and kittens and stuff actually exist? I always figured it was just a meme.

Are we all on the same page about what a safe space is? I don't think we are.

Probably, can you explain it to our ignorant asses?

I think part of the ignorance, at least on my side of the argument, is that we think there are a lot of students that are, for example, "offended" by the Trump chalkings.  In reality, it's a small fraction of students.  It doesn't take very many people to bang on glass and pull fire alarms to make "the system" make that dirty Joo shut his Joo mouth or to get that well dressed queer to cancel his private lecture at the Young Republicans' house.  My side's problem isn't really even with the little bigots and the sheep, it's the fact that the administrators and the cops so often side with them.  Nobody gives a sh**t if you have "safe spaces", but like Mr. Reactionary said, you don't get to pull out this magic shield in public places to stop all dialogue you don't want to hear.  You're free to leave, of course.  If rape is an idea you can't deal with, perhaps criminal law isn't a degree you should be trying for.  If you think the military is horrible, put up a booth next to the ROTC booth explaining why you think that way.  If political advertising makes you run to the dean in fear for your safety, you don't need the dean agreeing with you, you need counseling.  Like, serious counseling.

(and by the way, saying "you're not in college, why do you care?" is a pretty stupid argument if you think about it for more than 2 seconds evergreen....give it a try sometime)

..but yeah Tony, please give us the low down on "safe spaces", at least as you see them.  (this not a loaded question, I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely want to know what you think)

Safe spaces are, as far as I've always been told and understood, simply places where people who constantly take sh*t from society (say, women, blacks, LGBT people) can be among themselves so they can take a break for a couple minutes from taking sh*t from society. They're presumably very easy and cheap to set up (it's not like there's any university campus that doesn't have a couple rooms to spare), and don't infringe on the sacro-sanct rights of straight white guys (free speech or otherwise) in any way.

Maybe I'm wrong (I'm sure Evergreen could provide a more detailed explanation anyway), but if I'm right people who are voting no are either bigoted dicks or (like you apparently) morons who have opinions on things they don't know.

That's not quite fair. This is Atlas, everyone is supposed to have an opinion on everything. Tongue
