Yep. Statistically, we lead only in corporate taxes and defense spending. Our political system is laughably stagnant, and we are currently passing on nearly 20 trillion dollars of debt, more than our GDP, to our children and grandchildren. We need less small talk and more solutions for the country.

No, it's already great. Why do so many conservatives hate America?

Wanting things to change and expecting better of our country doesn't equate to hating America.

I was being sarcastic, since some conservatives like to accuse their opponents of hating America. Wink

America has never been and will likely never be anything resembling great. It's disgusting inside and out. I think Trump could build many architectural achievements to rejuvenate our cities, but even he couldn't do enough.

Yes.  I, too, long for the glory days when slavery was instituted, small children worked in factories, childbirth was the number one killer of women, and most people looked forward to dying of cholera or something by age 40.

America is great. Doesn't mean it can't be better. The 180 that so many conservatives have done here, going from babbling on about "American Exceptionalism" to acting like there's something fundamentally wrong with the country, is funny, but a little disturbing when you think about it. Not much has radically changed because of Obama when compared to the past 20 years. All the sudden rage is pretty odd, and something tells me the motivations can't be good. This is from someone who voted for Romney and would've voted for McCain had I been old enough at the time.

Am I the only one who thinks it's hysterically lame when posters like BRTD and Wulfric make a poll asking a question and then defiantly answer it in their first post, as if this is a test and they're quizzing us?

So true. Wasn't it just a couple years ago when Republicans were accusing Obama of hating America because he didn't embrace "American exceptionalism?" Now all they do is talk about how horrible America is and how only Trump can fix it. lol

In some ways yes. Economy, jobs, manufacturing, infrastructure and being the world's only superpower. Yeah, I agree. But not ripping apart the progress thas has been made on civil rights, women, black and gays rights (though much remains to be done).

To condense the point of the video above: If you think America needs to be made great "again", that implies there was a time when it was great, but it no longer is.

So I ask: What time period when America was "great" do you wish to go back to?

Define "great". You can interpret it in many ways.

The way Trump is arguing for? No.

This.  When Reagan took office, we really lost our way as a society when we abandoned the concept of our shared responsibility to help those less fortunate than ourselves and instead began worshiping at the alter of the almighty dollar.  We need to reject this culture of greed and excess in favor of a Great Society mindset.  I don't think this what Trump means though Tongue

America is and always has been great. We aren't and never have been perfect, but comparing us to every other country I think our greatness is quite apparent. I think Trump's slogan should be 'Make America Better' but obviously that sounds horrible and would not have caught on Tongue

Edit: just would like to add that I think a lot of us have different definitions of 'great'

It depends.

Economically, we have seen 16 years of pretty stagnant growth, especially for those outside the top decile, especially when compared to pre-1970 growth levels.

Socially, we see a whole lot more equality for women and racial minorities than in the past.  This is an obvious plus.

Morally, the Bible has unfortunately been taken out of schools, abortion is legal, and people are replacing virtue with extreme self-aggrandizement and belief in self-identity determining 'truth' rather than the other way around.  Very negative here (IMO, though someone with a secular POV would obviously disagree).
