I guess you're right. Have past presumptive nominees given "auditions" to possible VP candidates?  This seems unusual, but Trump doesn't follow any known pattern or rules.

Romney auditioned all of his short listers extensively four years ago.  Summer of 2012 saw all of them doing quite a few public events with him, so he could see them all in action.
