I have to bump this because I was indifferent at the time thinking yeah, it was probably just me liking it at 8-10 as the comments said (and I do remember despising Ash and Brock so would it make sense to like it without likeable characters?). I spent this weekend with my cousins watching several episodes, and wow, that was fantastic. I couldn't stop laughing at some of this genuinely good writing. My adult siblings said they too started rewatching recently, and they really couldn't stop.
Yeah, the Team Rocket plot is overdone, but I don't think it detracts from it. I really like them.
