Feinstein is one of the most authoritarian senators, so this is sad, but not surprising.

The good people of California have the chance to elect a real progressive to replace her.

I have to say, of the liberal Democrats in the Senate, I find myself agreeing with Feinstein fairly often.

She's always been way more moderate. Boxer is the real liberal in the senate.

How's that a bad thing? The country would do better with more authoritarianism.

However, while the principle is admirable (which is rare for a corporatist like her), it is a missed opportunity to regulate like hell, demonize it, and stick it to all those "Stoners Against 19" people.

Ew, no, we don't want him.

Also, HP move by Feinstein, who isn't really that good anyway.

Santender the person?  Seems cool.  His politics?  The last thing we need more of as a party.

Not shocking, she's quite hawkish/authoritarian (as Scott mentioned). What a piss poor representation for California though (which should overwhelmingly legalize it).

It's nice to know she sometimes takes a break from attempting to have snowden executed and trying to have the government spy on everyone other than her.

Is hawkishness really relevant to your opinion of pot legalization? Tongue

No but I think its worth mentioning since she's generally more right wing on some social and foreign policy issues (adding to why she's a bad fit for a Democrat from California)

On the flip side, a potential endorsement from Boxer would be a huge get for the campaign (Not like they'd probably need it). So far, it's already gotten more congressional endorsements (State & federal) than Prop 19 ever did.

Feinstein is fast finding herself isolated from the greater leftward stride of Democrats here. Her protege is the political figurehead of the legalization campaign, both of her potential Senate partners have accepting of the changing opinion regarding marijuana, and the California Democratic Party has endorsed it. In the meantime, shes going back to her well of "stoned drivers" worries that she repeated when Prop 19 came to a vote

The status quo on Marijuana is intolerable and there ought to be some kind of legalization, but the outrage on this thread is excessive.

Can we please for f**k's sake stop referring to "fiscally liberal but socially conservative" (unlike you lol) politicians as "authoritarian"? That's not what the word means or how it has ever been used by anyone worth listening.

Fine,  "all nanny-statist, all the time" then.

Also it'd be incorrect to describe either Feinstein or Michael Bloomberg (the two most prominent politicians of this breed) as "socially conservative".

Lol, Atlas.

How many 83 year olds in elected office are for pot legalization?  This really has to be one of the worst places for political analysis.

Ron Paul is 80 and Bernie Sanders is 74. Not that far off.

Ron Paul is neither 83 nor in elected office.  Sanders isn't 83, if you want to play the technicality game instead of looking at the big picture.  Navel gazing at the extreme exception is what people excel at on this forum not using common sense and looking at the big picture.

Olds aren't fans of pot.  That this comes as a shock to anyone who claims to be interested in politics kind of indicates how clueless they are.
