Surely I'm not the only one troubled by Kerry's initial statement, in particular the lack of even a token mention of how democracy and the constitutional order of a country such as this should be respected?

I wouldn't be too shocked if the US had a hand in this. Wouldn't be the first time.

Never thought I'd ever support a (possibly)U.S.-backed coup.

Given the scale I am sure the CIA and/or US military should have pre-knowledge of this.

I hope so. One generalissimo Sissi in the region is enough.

Some things to remember:
 - The Pentagon said they didn't have any warning of this,
 - But that doesn't say anything about the CIA or State.
 - Fethullah Gülen, who has a lot of allies in the army, lives in Pennsylvania.

Fingers crossed for it to succeed. Erdogan needs to be removed.

Are you a liberal or a democrat?

I want real democracy (not Erdogan's bonapartist regime) to be restored, and the military is currently the best option for that.

Kerry's statement was pretty much "oh, I had to said something mild, guys"

I usually have no problems with military coups (they are often better than the alternative) but in this fight I am for Erdogan

Military is saying the country is now being governed by a Peace Council, which will respect the civil rights and liberties of all regardless of religion, with a quick return to democracy and that Erdogan was an enemy of democracy.

Reminds me of the coup against Diem in '63. Basically, our little boy pissed off the State Department due to too many human rights violations, and there were longstanding animosities in the military to exploit.

Also, Putin probably told Kerry he wanted Erdogan out. If one looks at the Russia-Syria-Iraq-Iran noose Kerry wants to build against ISIS, Turkey was clearly the odd one out.

All alliances and treaties will be upheld, according to the Peace Council (aka military rulers).

Why do some people seem to think that coups must always be the result of some kind of CIA plot? There are more than enough elements in Turkey who'd support outsting Erdogan.
