I am almost more convinced now by the "Erdogan wanted this to happen" theory. It just seems completely foolish to do this without knowing whether popular support would get behind it.

Ergenekon convictions being made void showed that Judiciary main leaders would be open to legitimize a military coup. But for many elements in Turkey society (youth, peasants, working class, Kurds), Erdogan is lesser evil than military because of memoirs from Evran times.

I suppose it's also possible he might have been tipped off that the coup was happening days or weeks ago and figured he had a lot more to gain from letting it happen and returning as a national hero than just arresting a bunch of military officials and saying they were plotting to overthrow him.

Seriously people if it's secularists behind this then the only people that will be bolstered is Isis, when the military decide to declare full on war with the Kurds and cause the whole area to implode. As it is it's likely Gulenists, so, err.

Really? I haven't seen any indicTion that the military has changed their decade old stance of wiping out Kurds en masse, but eh. Especially as the AKP has a huge electoral base amongst Kurds, and allies of the military are known to lynch Kurds in the Se in this recent conflict.

Current numbers : 192 dead, including 104 coup soldiers, 47 civilians and 41 police. At least 1,154 injured. 754 arrested.

Occam's razor tells us Erdogan didn't plan this by himself to gain power in a Palpatine way. Still, we can also admit that 1) he probably had intelligence reports that something fishy was coming, since someone always speak, and 2) when sh**t hit the fan, he was therefore quick to take off to safety with his plane and let the thing unravel.

It seems the coup plotters did not even know where Erdogan was let alone have a plan to arrest him at the beginning of the coup.  If so this whole thing was never going to succeed.

This is absolutely devastating.  Say goodbye to Attaturk's Turkey. What a massive setback for the west in every way.  And then include Germany refusing Erdogan asylum and Kerry's statement of tacit approval and you have an anti-west dictator for life in Turkey.

Several media outlets report that at least one soldier was beheaded by an angry mob in Istanbul. Hopefully that's incorrect.

However, there seem to be authentic pictures of soldiers being flogged on the street en masse.
