People who were cheering the coup attempt when it was ongoing should shut up and not bemoan any possible blowback now that it failed.

An American Enterprise Institute official published an article in Newsweek in March that, if it came from the State Department would have been considered a greenlight for a coup:

Quote

This came on the heels of a long Atlantic interview in which stated, "Obama acknowledged that he initially viewed Erdogan, mistakenly, as the sort of moderate Muslim leader who would bridge the divide between East and West — but Obama now considers him a failure and an authoritarian, one who refuses to use his enormous army to bring stability to Syria.”; Foreign Policy Magazine picked up on both in June.

The chatter was out there and one wonders how much the coup plotters were aware of these articles.

Why?

Because they should have been smart enough to know ahead of time that what happened now would be a likely outcome. Anyone who is worried about the democratic state of Turkey should condemn the coup attempt wholeheartedly (as the opposition parties did) and not just cynically after the fact because it has strengthened Erdoğan now.

Wondering how many people here would be praising the coup by the military junta in Argentina in 1976, pointing out how they promised to "restore the rule of law", "bring order to chaos" and "respecting human rights".

?

A seemingly democratic government where human rights violations are rampant and chaos is the main order of things is replaced by a military junta that promises the rule of law, neutralization of the chaos and a return to the democratic principles of the nation.
How is it a stretch to think that some people here would support it?

Countdown until they start threatening to kick us out of Incirlik and Izmir... Not good!  It's coming.

I would think a US sponsored coup would have been more successful.

Whether or not it was US sponsored, it's clear that the administration and NATO was more than happy to go along with it once it began, and that's damning enough.  If the US was in on it then it's a COLOSSAL **** up on our part, because we clearly didn't do enough for it to be successful.

This is absolutely devastating.  Say goodbye to Attaturk's Turkey. What a massive setback for the west in every way.  And then include Germany refusing Erdogan asylum and Kerry's statement of tacit approval and you have an anti-west dictator for life in Turkey.

Yeah. And we should soon be left to enjoy hearing from Secretary Kerry how he may or may not have a clue what may or may not be happening in Turkey during what may or may not be a military coup which may or may not result in the overthrow of what may or may not be their current government. If the coup has in fact failed, the world may or may not be better off.

https://www.rt.com/news/351606-usa-incirlik-base-turkey-blocked/

Turkey has cut off power to Incirlik Air Base, which houses 70 American Nuclear Weapons and is blockading it. NATO and US operations from Incirlik against Iraq and Syria have been suspended as Turkey as closed off the airspace over Incirlik.

Omg.  It's happening faster than I expected.  Hopefully this will be a step too far for most of the military.

The stand-off between Turkey and the US is just starting.

I haven't seen anyone post anything from CNN.  Do you have a quote and link?  Plenty of nonsense was posted in this thread overnight.

Have you read any of the three articles I've posted (RT, CNN, ABC)? They all say the same thing. Power cut, airspace blocked, US working to restore power and regular operations.

Turkey blocked of Incirlik after the coup and have arrested Turkish Military collaborators working at Incirlik.

Turkey is demanding US extradition of Gulen if US-Turkish co-operation is to continue.

People are busy man.  If you have some evidence backing up outlandish claims just post it.  We don't have time to go on a treasure hunt looking for evidence to prove your claims.

As I suspected.  Turkey reiterated a request they have made numerous times before and a country that has just experienced an attempted coup grounded all military flights.  In other words standard and no big deal.

Two reasons I asked for proof was this thread was filled with hysterical statements last night and I had MSNBC on in the background and they weren't reporting anything like what the wonderful Russian "news" sources were putting out there.

I am confused why you question the accuracy of the statement by the US CONSULATE in Adana.

You quoted RT.com.  This is sad.

Not as hysterical as RT.com quotes but the US Defense Secretary's press secretary put out a statement...
