Trump clearly didn't think this through. It's no wonder there's speculation that he thought about dumping Pence at the last minute.

If he does, it'll go down worse than Eagleton and McGovern did.

Great Clinton ad material, along with video of him calling banning Muslims unconstitutional.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Republican vice presidential candidate. Perfect fit for Trump and his conspiracy theories (and poor math skills).

Bob Dole was also a "smoking denier".

Part of the Trump ticket said something blatantly false? In other news, there's a low chance of precipitation tonight in Arizona.

I have combined the two new past problematic statement/positions into a megathread as more press pour over Pence's past and find things that may cause problems.

i'd recommend that pence try an even safer activity - has anyone told him that a full five out of every six russian roulette players does not die from a russian roulette related injury?

This is all inconsequential. If it were Christie it would be the bridge and his weight. If it were Newt it would be about his wife and cancer. So it's Pence. Turn to Page 12 in your attackdog playbook. Libs would say he picked an awful VP nomatter if he picked Cruz, Rice, Newt, Christie etc

No he's not going to be on exactly the same page as Trump on everything, but most VP choices have at some point been at odds or criticized the top ticket guy.

Is it a surprise that they're pushing this "Omg TRUMP WANTED TO DUMP PENCE ASAP" fable. Not really. They want to suffocate this ticket in the crib.

Reagan/Bush 80. Bush and Reagan were never at odds right?

Pence isnt going to bring the house down. People were thrilled at Ryan in 2012 and he turned out to be a total bust and impotent loser.

Pence wont hurt Trump at all. He shows that Trump respects traditional conservative values voters. He cant win without them. Will Pence get destroyed by the Lena Dunham/Rachel Maddow Sodomite Brigade? Sure. Will he be cast as a fascist bigot. Yes yes he will. But the gains Trump will make in NC and Virginia and Northern Florida and Central PA will make up for that.

Why not give the whole link: Two Times Mike Pence Brushed Off Science. It also includes a part about his more recent anti-needle exchange stance (which would be an issue, exept he's a Republican, so I guess he gets a free pass).

I still don't understand why he picked Pence of all people. Idiotic decision.

He felt the ticket lacked bigotry, and wasn't ignorant enough.

If one buys the "Trump is a Dem/Clinton plant" conspiracy theory, Pence would arguably be the worst possible "credible" choice. Palin has her loyal followers and a certain loony charisma, plus real unpredictability. Pence is hated in his home state and will be a train wreck that stays firmly on the rails, while taking positions that are as bad as Palin's, if not worse.

Here's a compilation of every issue where they differ, per CNN. They disagree on the Muslim ban, attacks on a judge, immigration, gambling, LGBT, Planned Parenthood, trade, and the Iraq War. So pretty much all the issues Trump has highlighted or could have attacked Clinton on.

Yes, I agree.
The problem (for trump) is that the "good" candidates wanted nothing to do with his bigotry/racist/xenophobic campaign.

Pence isn't that Homophobic. in fact he's more of an inactive homophobe like Christie or Pope Francis, not an active homophobe like Huckabee.

Given that he signed that ridiculous bill, I'd say he's definitely active homophobe, just in a different style from someone like Huckabee.

He also supported moving AIDS funding to gay conversion therapy.

Did he really ?
That would be bad for him (and trump) .... really bad !
Can you post a link regarding this.

16 Years ago. That was back before straight camps were largely discredited, support for homosexual rights was a fringe issue, and HIV/AIDS wasn't quite a universal disease in the eyes of many yet.

Anyone who believes in torturing people through the witchcraft of "gay conversion therapy" is nutty. If Pence believes (or once believed) in this, he is going to get some negative feedback on this issue.

The issue really was that no one credible wanted to serve with Trump. Further, since Trump is out of the mainstream Republican orthodoxy, most people he picked would end up conflicting with him in some way.

However, the one area where Trump tried to one-up Clinton and appeal to Sanders voters was through trade. He selected one one of the most pro-free trade, pro-TPP candidates out there. I think he loses credibility when he says he's anti trade, anti TPP and goes around and selects someone so opposite his beliefs.

Pence has other issues - his anti LGBT, anti Planned Parenthood and anti evolution stances will turn off the very people Trump needs to make inroads with: women and college educated whites.
