Hillary Clinton had the advantage of watching who Trump selected as a running mate first.  Now that we know that it is Pence, how does his nomination influence her own selection?

I still think it's going to be Sanders.

Because she wants to make sure enough Democrats turn out for her in November.

It won't influence it. Probably still Kaine.

Tim Kaine?  Though some on this site might say he isn't liberal.  I suppose the argument would be that because Trump chose someone with considerable experience but low wattage, Clinton should do the same.  Steady leadership is supposed to be her brand and an inexperienced pick like Castro would create a bad contrast with Pence.

Sherrod Brown would fit the bill, but Clinton would be foolish to surrender a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio with a Supreme Court vacancy at stake.

Pence is boring, which means Hillary doesn't need to make an exciting pick - she probably was going to pick Kaine anyways but now it's even more likely.

Any democrat who would even consider voting for Clinton will almost definitely already turn out for her. The ultra-die-hards she'd be trying to woo by picking Sanders would never vote for her anyway.

You really think the combo of Captain Borderwall and Lieutenant Religious-Freedom won't help Democratic turnout. Plus, Clinton is absorbing more and more of the Sanders supporters.

Such an extreme ticket does give Clinton more licence to pick a moderate running-mate.

I think she has the room/latitude to chose who she's most comfortable with, probably either Kaine or Vilsack.  At least she'll be able to be in the same room with them, unlike some candidates.

Locks down a Kaine candidacy.

Goes for a solid, safe pick.

Does not have to go for someone who might be more exciting.

This pick has less impact on what the Democrats should do than any pick Trump could have made.

I actually think it frees her up to pick Kaine. I would've been worried about low energy boring Kaine going up against someone like Christie or Gingrich. But Pence is just as low energy and boring, if not moreso. So she can effectively make the VP debate irrelevant.

A USA Today column on July 17th argues  the Pence pick makes a Kaine pick more feasible:

I think a Kaine or Vilsack type candidate (more boring, but extensive governing experience) is more likely following the Pence pick. I feel as if Warren is less likely to be picked now.

NYT's take is that the Pence pick leaves Clinton considerable room to maneuver on her own choice:

Not very much.  I don't think the VP is even a top 30 issue to voters.  Most of the country doesn't even know who the Vice-President is now thanks to our public schools.  Pence was a do no harm pick and if Clinton is smart she'll follow.  Unless she picks her lifelong running mate, Terry McAuliffe, she'll be ok.
