Well it's certainly a bit... well... weird to put a number on this surely?

I don't think it's necessarily any weirder than the Kinsey scale. Which is probably a good argument against the Kinsey scale.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how, for example, a Kinsey 1 would act in general that would differentiate them from a 0 or a 2.

Yeah, the 'only incidentally' and 'more than incidentally' distinction always confused me, because any degree of something happening consists of 'incidents', it's just a question of how many of them.

It's more to do with allowing the participant in the test to differentiate between the 'one time I touched a boys dick when I was 11' (which in many ways isn't an indication of the sexual, never mind sexuality) and then either jumping to a 0 response defensively or optioning for a 2 which is too open.

The scale get's a strange degree of flack when it's simply representing sexuality in a spectrum, which is what it essentially is.

Whatever can be said of the Kinsey scale it is at least trying to measure something that can theoretically be measured objectively (theoretically because of course how we see ourselves will distort etc) even if maybe it doesn't do the best of jobs. But unless we're talking literally of 'how quickly can you grow a beard', 'what's your jawline' or whatever (which is surely pointless?) 'masculinity' and 'femininity' are largely subjective so...

Currently? Probably 1-2. Ideally? Probably 4-5. (I want to change both my body and my face a lot in order to make them much more feminine.)

It might be subjective to some extent, but there are very strong and widespread social norms. Which is terrible, and I've been arguing against them for at least 3 pages of this, but it's a reality. I think that's what the scale is referring to.

But they differ don't they. And of course it isn't as though these social norms automatically imply that there's a single scale with masculinity on the one end and femininity on the other. Not at all. There are, for instance, still certain older working class men in Britain who think that getting drunk is pathetic and unmanly. This does not mean that these people believe that getting drunk is feminine.

That's very true, and a point I tried to make earlier on (or if I failed to make it explicitly, then it's a point I should have made). Personally I feel like I'm both pretty un-masculine and very much un-feminine, fwiw.

Still, I'd say using a scale instead of binary is a tiny step in the right direction. At least it doesn't lock people up into two hermetic compartments.

For those interested, here is a quiz that ranks you on... well, some type of a scale anyway.  Gender is something that I think nurture and nature, perhaps equally, play a role in, in that we are are least partly defined by our biology (I refer to hormones more than I do physical traits, certainly) but we operate within the context of what society expects of us.  Free will and all that.  I don't think it's unfair to say that the traits mentioned in the above quiz are often associated with one gender more so than the other and always have been, generally speaking.  That's not to say it's totally unbiased or that we'll ever have an objective way of "measuring" gender (whatever that means).  Gender, after all, isn't a number.

With that caveat, I scored 72% feminine-31% masculine on this one, the former actually being much higher than I expected.

I received 81/17 Feminine, which I guess is fair, but I don't see how "Introverted" fits into this as well as a couple others. I've never seen any indications that that is significantly different from 50/50.

0% Masculine, 56% Feminine

I'm pretty surprised, tbh. I swear I didn't try to get a low masculine score on purpose Tongue - in fact, there are a few traits I agreed with that sounded "masculine" to me.

Still, very good news! Smiley

I remember previously doing this test and getting something like 50% masculine and about 8% feminine.

If the test had a question about chocolate, I'd probably get 99% feminine. Tongue
