If Michael Bloomberg had indeed decided to run for President as an independent, how do you think his polling numbers would be doing at this point? Before he made a decision not to throw his hat in the ring, he was hovering around 10-15% in hypothetical matchups.

considering how poorly clinton and trump are and how disliked they are atm, I think he may be above 20, at least 15

If Gary Johnson can poll at 13%, Bloomberg would be over 20% if not higher. He said he'd spend $1 billion of his own money and Johnson isn't spending anything.

I'm still sad he declined to run. I would've backed him in a heartbeat.

20% at least because, unlike Johnson, he has significant name-recognition. However, given his left-wing leanings, most of his votes would come at Hillary's expense. Therefore, Trump would likely be tied or thereabouts with Hillary right now.

Yes and New York would be the battleground state that would decide the election.

Does this forum ALWAYS overestimate candidates who don't run? He'd be polling around 10% at best. He'd be scooping up a bunch of people saying they'd vote for Johnson/Stein as a protest vote, and not much beyond that.

Less than 10%, he's not a good alternative to either Hillary or Trump

A very well recognized and experienced candidate who has enough cash needed to run a substantial campaign should do significantly better than Johnson, who is consistently polling around 10%. He would be able to pick up some people from both major parties since their nominees are so disliked and he is moderate.

Probably would siphon polling numbers from Johnson and Stein now, polling around 10% or so, but wouldn't make a huge difference in the end. Maybe Nader-level support.

I'm with Jonathan Chait in thinking that the interesting scenario would actually be a Bloomberg third party candidacy in a world where Trump is the GOP nominee and Sanders (rather than Clinton) is the Dem. nominee.  That would be interesting, because Bloomberg would have a niche as the non-socialist/non-racist candidate, and he'd probably get tons of fawning media coverage from pundits who don't view either Sanders or Trump as "serious people".

He personifies the worst parts that people hate about both Hillary and Trump.

I bet he would poll ok, and probably make the debates, but there's no way he'd get over 10% in the election.

Johnson isn't polling at 10%. "Other" is polling at 10%.
