Everyone knows he's gonna try to emulate Reagan in '76, but will he go all the way to endorse the man who called his wife ugly and said his dad was involved the assassination of JFK?

Not directly but I could see him asking everyone to get behind all Republicans in November and indirectly endorse Trump.

Tweet from Dana Bash of CNN :

Source: @tedcruz does not have @realDonaldTrump endorsement in prepared text. That could change. Texas delegates tell me they want him to

Obviously he is thinking Cruz 2020. So what serves that best? Reagan and Ford appeared together in 1976 on stage and Reagan said "We must go forth from here united." Like Reagan he can give a rousing speech about the values of party and the future and how the Democrats want to ruin America, etc. And imagine if Trump came out at the end of Cruz' speech and they embraced. Would Cruz be rewarded in 2020 for being a team player and loyal to the party and honoring his word?

Remember Cruz' plan was to hug Trump all the way to the end. He assumed Trump would flame out and he would get all of his supporters, well maybe he goes back to that plan, just four years later. He needs those supporters in 2020 to win the nomination.

I am betting he endorses tonight (but then does little or nothing for Trump between now and November).

They already said he wasn't. Only one line of his 30 minute speech mentions Trump.

The Establishment won't help Cruz and will mount a challenge against him in 2018.

To be fair, chanting Cruz sounds a lot like a boo.

I was wrong. Not sure if it was the smartest thing for him to do for 2020, but I guess he couldn't embrace Trump.

More like the opposite.

Endorsing trump could have easily made him labeled a sellout in future elections and weaken the idea that he's a fighter.

The problem is that Cruz crapped on a whole slew of downballot Republicans.  How many local Republicans will lose because folks vote their consciences and the Libertarian with 3% of the vote makes a difference in a race.

Ultimately, Cruz crapped on himself.  If he doesn't say "I'm voting for Trump." tonight or tomorrow, he's done for 2020.  He's black-marked himself, and the stain won't come off.

Apparently I was wrong. As much as I have issues with Trump, what Cruz did just seems dumb and petty. If he didn't want to even indirectly endorse Trump, he should have skipped the Convention. Whatever anyone thinks of Kasich, at least he did this the right way.

It would have for me. I won't support anyone in the future who is backing Trump in this election.

Trump knew Cruz wouldn't endorse two days ago.

I find this hard to believe. If he had known, why on earth would be still allow him to speak? He would have to have known the negative media attention this would cause him.
