No, opposing Thomas will help Democrats with blacks.  Most blacks hate uncle toms.

Whatever the merits of Thomas as a judge, or the merits of his positions, he certainly is not anywhere near the judicial mainstream.  The Democrats would run at most a slight risk if they filibuster Thomas and no risk if they simply vote against him.
